Navy senior quarterback Ricky Dobbs ran for three touchdowns and threw for a fourth, as the Midshipmen humiliated Notre Dame, 35-17.
Dobbs accounted for 161 yards in total offense and the Midshipmen, ranked ninth in the nation in rushing, ran for 368 yards. Running back Andrew Teich ran for 211 yards in 26 carries. Navy limited Notre Dame quarterback Dayne Crist to 178 yards passing and intercepted him twice. The Irish were missing three starting receivers.
Dobbs started the scoring by leading a 99-yard, six-play drive and hitting Alexander Teich on a 31-yard screen pass. Notre Dame kicker David Ruffer then hit his 18th straight field goal, a 45-yarder, as the Irish closed the score to 7-3. Dobbs scored the second touchdown for Navy on an option play, a 3-yard run midway through the second quarter.Crist then countered by throwing a 16-yard scoring strike to freshman TJ Jones, as Navy led, 14-10. Navy tailback Gee Gee Greene completed the scoring in the first half by circling left end on a 9-yard run to put Navy up 21-10 at half.
Dobbs continued where he left off by scoring his second touchdown of the afternoon, a 9-yard run, early in the third quarter to extend Navy's lead to 28-10. After Crist was picked off, Dobbs led the Midshipmen to another touchdown, this time scoring on a 1-yard quarterback sneak, making the score 35-10. Cierre Wood scored on a 1-yard run for the Irish, midway through the fourth quarter.
The Midshipmen improved to 5-2, while the Irish dropped to 4-4. Notre Dame leads the overall series 71-12-1, but Navy has won three of the last four contests.
