Baylor quarterback Charlie Brewer threw for 221 yards and three first-half touchdowns to lead the Bears to a 26-7 win over Kansas on Saturday at McLane Stadium in Waco, Texas.
The win was the ninth straight for Baylor over Kansas. The Bears (3-1, 1-0 Big 12), who were coming off a 40-27 loss to Duke, accumulated 446 total yards.
Kansas (2-2, 0-1) manhandled Rutgers for a 41-point win the previous week, gaining 542 total yards. Kansas entered the game averaging 36.3 points on 386.7 total yards per game.
Coming into Saturday's contest, Kansas allowed less than 16 points per game.
But against the Bears and on the road in front of a hostile crowd, the Jayhawks found the going much more difficult. On Saturday, they were able to compile only 271 total yards.
The Bears opened the scoring on their second possession. Brewer engineered a six-play, 47-yard drive, which culminated in a 22-yard touchdown pass to Chris Platt.
The Jayhawks' Gabriel Rui missed a 48-yard field-goal attempt on Kansas' next possession, and Baylor quickly capitalized for a 14-0 lead when Brewer and Tyquan Thornton connected on a 39-yard scoring strike.
Brewer closed out the first-half scoring with a 34-yard touchdown pass to Josh Fleeks with a little over a minute left before intermission.
Baylor racked up 246 total yards in the first half, while Kansas managed a paltry 48 yards.
Kansas' true freshman Pooka Williams Jr., who rushed for 288 yards and three touchdowns in the previous two games, gained 16 yards on nine carries in the first half.
The Jayhawks offense came alive somewhat in the second half and Williams finished with 89 yards on 14 carries.
Midway through the third quarter, the Jayhawks cut the deficit to 23-7 when quarterback Peyton Bender drove Kansas 90 yards for their only score of the day. Bender hit Jeremiah Booker from 10 yards out to get Kansas on the board.
After Connor Martin connected on his second field goal of the day -- a 27-yarder to make the score 26-7 -- Kansas moved the ball deep into Baylor territory where the offense stalled when Bender's pass on fourth-and-9 to Stephon Robinson gained only seven yards.
Bender finished 10 of 17 for 105 yards and the one score. Brewer completed 19 of 27 passes.
In their first three games, the Jayhawks forced 13 turnovers. On Saturday, neither team committed a turnover.
