FORT WORTH, Texas -- The Heisman candidacy of quarterback Trevone Boykin had to get a boost after Saturday night's performance against TCU's neighboring rival.
Boykin was responsible for six touchdowns and more than 500 yards as the No. 3 Horned Frogs finished strong for a 56-37 win over SMU at Amon G. Carter Stadium.
Boykin completed 21 of 30 passes for 454 yards and five scores, and added another touchdown on the ground as TCU (3-0) completed its nonconference schedule unscathed.
TCU is 3-0 for the seventh time in the last 10 seasons and the Big 12 favorites open conference play next week at Texas Tech.
Boykin completed throws to nine teammates, including five passes to receiver Josh Doctson for 171 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Aaron Green rushed for a season-high 164 yards and two scores.
TCU finished with 720 yards of total offense to SMU's 508.
The Horned Frogs also beat the Mustangs (1-2) for the eighth time in the last nine years. But the TCU-SMU rivalry only figures to gain stream with the arrival of first-year Mustangs coach Chad Morris.
SMU quarterback Matt Davis provided a glimpse of big-play potential of Morris' attack. Davis (17-31, 330 yards, 1 TD) had seven completions of at least 24 yards while also running for two touchdowns.
The Horned Frogs appeared to break the game open on their first two drives of the third quarter. Boykin quickly and efficiently directed touchdown drives that ended with scoring passes to receiver Kolby Listenbee (31 yards) and tight end Dominic Merka (19 yards), respectively.
The Mustangs responded with a 17-0 burst to end the third quarter, getting the visitors within 42-34. Davis scored twice on the ground, the second following a Boykin interception and kicked Chad Hedlund nailed a 21-yard field goal to end the third.
Hedlund had a 32-yard field goal after the Mustangs made a fourth-down stop on the first possession of the fourth and with about eight minutes left, it was a 42-37 deficit.
Boykin and Doctson then came up big, connecting on a 42-yard touchdown They and TCU was up 49-37 with 6:32 left. Green capped the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown in the final minute.
Boykin threw three touchdowns as TCU took a 28-17 into halftime. The senior accounted for 280 yards and three touchdowns in the half, as the team piled up 363 yards.
Davis was solid with 149 yards passing and another 43 yards on the ground. His lone touchdown pass came in the final seconds of the first half.
The Mustangs took a 7-0 lead on the game's opening drive as running back Xavier Jones powered it in from 2 yards out for the first score.
The Frogs needed less than a minute to tie it as wide receiver KaVontae Turpin took a short toss from Boykin in the middle of the field and outran everyone for a 61-yard touchdown.
Several big throws from Davis set up a 22-yard field goal on SMU's next drive for a 10-7 advantage.
TCU answered to take its first lead. Boykin's 39-yard bomb to receiver Doctson led to Green's short touchdown to make to 14-10.
Doctson and Boykin connected again early in the second quarter, this time on a 29-yard touchdown.
TCU scored its third unanswered touchdown with two minutes left in the first half on a 20-yard scramble by Boykin, who slipped out of a sack and broke into the open field before taking on two defenders at the goal line.
Despite the 21-0 run, the Mustangs managed to take some momentum into the locker room. Davis hit receiver Ryheem Malone on a 63-yard heave to the TCU 12-yard line and six plays later, he found receiver Courtland Sutton in the back of the end zone.
