Louisiana-Lafayette 45, Southern 6: Terrance Broadway threw for three touchdowns and ran for another as the Ragin' Cajuns cruised past the Jaguars to win their seventh consecutive home opener.
Broadway overcame two interceptions and went 20-of-32 for 237 yards before giving way to Brooks Haack after staking Louisiana-Lafayette to a 38-6 lead early in the fourth quarter. Jamal Robinson had five catches for a game-high 112 yards and two TDs while Elijah McGuire rushed for 129 yards on 13 carries for the Ragin' Cajuns (1-0), who have outscored their four FCS opponents 193-34 under fourth-year coach Mark Hudspeth.
Austin Howard took over for ineffective starter Deonte Shorts and passed for 181 yards, throwing a touchdown pass to Bradley Coleman to account for Southern’s only score. Willie Quinn finished with eight receptions for 105 yards to pace the Jaguars (0-1).
After the Jaguars’ Kyle Yonke was unable to convert a short field-goal attempt to answer a 31-yard kick from Hunter Stover for a 3-0 lead, McGuire capped an 80-yard drive in six plays with an 8-yard run late in the first. Broadway continued Louisiana-Lafayette’s 24-point first-half ambush in the second quarter, connecting with Robinson from 32 yards out before hooking up with Jared Johnson on a 13-yard score.
Southern got on the board on its opening second-half possession on Howard’s 23-yard toss to Coleman, but Yonke missed the extra point and Robinson extended the margin to 31-6 with a leaping grab in the end zone with 4:37 left in the third. Broadway exited after an 8-yard TD scamper early in the final stanza and Haack concluded the rout with a 2-yard flip to tight end Larry Pettis for his second career touchdown pass.
