Navy 35, Texas State 21: Tago Smith threw for a pair of scores and ran for two more to lead the Midshipmen in a dominant victory over the host Bobcats.
Smith went 5-of-7 for 117 yards and added 85 yards rushing in his first career start at quarterback for Navy (2-1), which was without the services of injured starter Keenan Reynolds (knee). Noah Copeland rushed for 116 yards and Chris Swain added a rushing touchdown in a 352-yard performance by the Midshipmen's ground game.
Tyler Jones passed for a TD and rushed for another while Robert Lowe recorded 92 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries for Texas State (1-1), which committed 11 penalties for 124 yards. Bradley Miller caught seven passes for 62 yards and Terrence Franks hauled in a scoring toss.
The Midshipmen scored a touchdown on all but one drive in the first half for a commanding 28-7 lead at intermission. The Bobcats drove into Navy territory only twice, missing a 32-yard field goal on the first and scoring a touchdown via a 1-yard plunge by Jones on the second.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Bobcats began eating away at the deficit with a 1-yard scoring run by Lowe in the opening minutes of the final period, but Smith quickly responded with a 67-yard scoring strike to Jamir Tillman on the ensuing drive to restore Navy's 21-point cushion. Jones led one last scoring effort in the final four minutes, hitting Franks for a 12-yard touchdown, but the Bobcats were unable to dismiss Navy's overwhelming lead down the stretch.
