No. 9 Oklahoma 31, Texas 26: Trevor Knight threw a touchdown pass to Sterling Shepard and Samaje Perine rushed for a score as the Sooners overcame a tough Longhorns defense to take the Red River Showdown in Dallas.
Alex Ross returned a kickoff for a touchdown and Zack Sanchez ran an interception back for a score for Oklahoma (5-1, 2-1 Big 12), which converted just 1-of-11 third downs and was outgained by over 200 yards. Knight went 12-of-20 for 129 yards and Perine ran for 62 yards as the Sooners bounced back from a loss to Texas Christian last week.
Tyrone Swoopes went 27-of-44 for 334 yards and two touchdowns while adding 50 yards and a score on the ground for Texas (2-4, 1-2), which fell behind by 18 points early in the fourth quarter before scoring on back-to-back possessions. John Harris hauled in a pair of TD catches and Malcolm Brown ran for 78 yards for the Longhorns.
Texas outgained Oklahoma 278-29 in the first half but made a series of mistakes that let the Sooners take a 17-13 lead into the locker room. A coverage breakdown on a kickoff return led to Ross’ 91-yard TD return and the Longhorns had a 73-yard run by Swoopes called back due to a holding penalty before Sanchez returned an interception 43 yards for a score.
Oklahoma gained more on its first play of the third quarter than in the entire first half when Shepard broke free for a 31-yard run but did not get its first offensive TD until Knight and Shepard hooked up for a 24-yard score with 4:17 left in the third to push the lead to 24-13. Perine’s 13-yard TD with 12:50 to play made it 31-13, providing just enough cushion to withstand a late charge by the Texas offense.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Oklahoma avoided back-to-back losses for the first time since 1999. … Texas is off to its worst six-game start since beginning the 1956 campaign 1-5. … Jaxon Shipley and Marcus Johnson combined for 16 catches and 208 yards for the Longhorns.
