McHargue was just 9-for-21 but hit on several big plays for Rice (4-2, 3-0 C-USA), averaging 20.3 yards per completion. The Owls have won three straight overall and seven straight against conference opponents dating to last season.
Texas-San Antonio (2-5, 1-2) outgained the Owls 434-340 but was hurt by a key turnover during a pivotal stretch of the second quarter and a pair of missed field goals. Eric Soza was 17-for-31 for 170 yards and rushed for 85 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Roadrunners.
UTSA took a 7-6 lead on David Glasco II's 1-yard touchdown run with 9:23 left in the first half, but a muffed punt set up Darik Dillard's 4-yard run for the go-ahead score as Rice reeled off 21 straight points. The Roadrunners squandered two scoring chances in the first half when Sean Ianno missed field goals from 46 and 48 yards.
McHargue hit Dennis Parks for a 37-yard touchdown to make it 20-7 at halftime and capped a 66-yard drive with a 6-yard scoring run in the third quarter to extend the margin. Soza capped a pair of fourth-quarter drives with 1-yard touchdown runs, but the Owls recovered an onside kick and ran out the clock.
