South Alabama 38, Georgia State 17: Shavarez Smith caught 10 passes for a school-record 194 yards and a touchdown as the visiting Jaguars rolled over the winless Panthers.
Jay Jones also rushed for 102 yards and a pair of touchdowns for South Alabama (5-6, 3-3 Sun Belt), which outgained Georgia State 242-24 on the ground. Ross Metheny completed 19-of-28 for 280 yards and a score to go along with a rushing touchdown for the Jaguars, who can become bowl eligible by beating Louisiana-Lafayette on Dec. 7.
Ronnie Bell threw for 321 yards and ran for a touchdown to lead the Panthers (0-12, 0-7). Georgia State’s Robert Davis caught four passes for 110 yards while teammate Albert Wilson pulled in six for 101.
Jones scored on 5-yard run 7:18 into the game and added a 17-yard scamper for a touchdown late in the first quarter for a 14-0 advantage. Wil Lutz got Georgia State on the board with a 33-yard field goal, but Matheny capped a nine-play drive with a 1-yard run and the Jaguars led 24-3 at intermission.
Metheny connected with Smith for a 37-yard score to cap the first drive of the second half and Georgia State followed with a 1-yard touchdown run by Bell. The Jaguars responded with 13-play drive that lasted 6:28 and ended with a 1-yard run by Kendall Houston with 1:09 left in the third quarter.
