J'Veyon Browning scored a one-yard touchdown with 2:49 remaining in the fourth quarter to help visiting Northern Iowa upset Iowa State 25-20 on Saturday night at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames, Iowa.
Quarterback Aaron Bailey completed 15-of-27 passes for 135 yards and rushed for 114 yards on 24 carries for Northern Iowa (1-0). Tyvis Smith had 64 yards on 16 carries.
Joel Lanning completed 18-of-27 passes for 256 yards and three touchdowns for Iowa State (0-1). Allen Lazard had six catches for 129 yards.
Iowa State went up 7-0 when Lanning threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Dondre Daley in the first quarter. Northern Iowa tied the game on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Bailey to Smith early in the second. The Cyclones reclaimed the lead on an 18-yard touchdown pass from Lanning to Hakeem Butler with 3:20 to play in the opening half, but kicker Cole Netten missed the extra-point attempt.
The Panthers recorded a safety when defensive lineman Karter Schult sacked Lanning in the end zone late in the half. They took a 16-13 lead when Bailey scored on a two-yard run on the final play of the first half.
Northern Iowa added to its lead when Austin Errthum kicked a 22-yard field goal with 4:20 to go in the third quarter, putting the Panthers up 19-13. The Cyclones took a 20-19 lead when Lanning threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Lazard with 7:02 remaining, but an interception on Iowa State's next possession proved costly.
Charles Brown picked off a pass from Lanning and returned it 26 yards to the Iowa State 36-yard line. Five plays later, Browning scored on a 1-yard run to give the Panthers a 25-20 lead with 2:49 to play.
Lanning threw another interception with 1:19 remaining and the Panthers ran out the clock.
