Georgia Southern's RJ Murray blocked a potential go-ahead field goal attempt with 1:16 to play, helping the Eagles hold off visiting Louisiana-Monroe for a 23-21 victory Saturday at Paulson Stadium.
Wesley Field and Kevin Ellison had touchdown runs, and kicker Younghoe Koo made three field goals to help the Eagles improve to 3-0. Georgia Southern finished with 345 yards on the ground.
Louisiana-Monroe quarterback Garrett Smith threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to Xavier Brown and ran for a 7-yard touchdown to put the Warhawks up 14-0 in the first quarter.
Georgia Southern answered with a 6-yard touchdown run from Ellison and Koo kicked a 32-yard field goal to cut the Louisiana-Monroe lead to 14-10 at halftime.
The Eagles were leading 16-14 late in the third quarter, after Koo's second field goal of the game, and were threatening deep inside Louisiana-Monroe territory, before Georgia Southern's Fabian Upshaw mishandled a snap and lost a fumble at the 5-yard line.
Wesley Fields scored on a 2-yard run early in the fourth quarter to push the Eagles lead to 23-14.
Smith completed 17 of 33 passes for 283 yards and two touchdowns, including a 10-yard strike to Marcus Green that trimmed the Georgia Southern lead to 23-21 with 10 minutes to play.
The Warhawks fell to 1-2.
