MANHATTAN, Kan. -- Kansas State raced to a two-touchdown lead in the first half and held on to defeat Texas 24-21 in front of 52,328 Saturday at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.
Kansas State (4-3, 2-2 Big 12) used a balanced offense with 234 yards on the ground and 171 through the air. Jesse Ertz passed for 171 yards and a touchdown and added 78 yards and a pair of scores on the ground to lead the way.
Texas (3-4, 1-3) had opportunities to cut into a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter but could not capitalize on two Wildcats turnovers. Edwin Freeman returned an interception 33 yards to the K-State 36 with 9:50 left, but the Longhorns turned it over on downs.
After Ertz fumbled trying to convert a third-and-1, the Longhorns had the ball on their own 47. But Trent Domingue missed a 35-yard field-goal attempt.
Texas used its final two timeouts, then took over on its own 43 with 2:53 left, down 10 points. The Longhorns finally scored on a 6-yard pass from Shane Buechele to Dorian Leonard, but the onside kick went out of bounds.
Kansas State took control early and maintained it throughout the first half, with a lot of help from Texas. The Wildcats scored on their opening drive with a nine-play, 68-yard drive that included three defensive penalties, including two off-sides penalties, by Texas.
Ertz scored his second rushing touchdown of the game to give the Wildcats a 14-0 lead with 13:32 left in the first half. Kansas State converted three third downs and a fourth down on the scoring drive.
The Longhorns got back into the game on an 80-yard touchdown pass from Buechele to Devin Duvernay with 4:03 left in the half, but a nine-play, 75-yard drive used all but 9 seconds before Ertz connected with Byron Pringle in the back of the end zone for a 21-7 halftime lead.
The Wildcats had a chance to blow it open early in the second half. Following a three-and-out on Texas' first possession, the Wildcats marched down to the Longhorns' 3-yard line. Charles Jones appeared to score a touchdown on the next play, but the ball was jarred loose and Texas recovered.
The Longhorns couldn't do anything with it, and Kansas State stretched the lead to 24-7 on a 35-yard field goal by Matthew McCrane. Texas scored on an 8-yard run by Tyrone Swoopes late in the third quarter to cut the lead to 10 points.
