Iowa State @ Kansas State preview

Bill Snyder Family Football Stadium

Last Meeting ( Nov 24, 2018 ) Kansas State 38, Iowa State 42

Julian Good-Jones will break one of the more difficult records in football while playing one of the most demanding positions when he suits up for Iowa State on Saturday in a Big 12 game at Kansas State. The offensive lineman will make his 49th career start to become the all-time leader for the Cyclones, who will be in search of a second straight victory over the Wildcats.

Good-Jones, who is set to break the mark he shares with quarterback Bret Meyer (2004-07), has started all 48 of his prior games consecutively - an active streak surpassed by only 11 FBS players including Kansas State offensive lineman Scott Frantz, who is set to make his 50th straight start. Good-Jones, a 6-5, 308-pound tackle from Cedar Rapids, helped to lead the program back from a series of losing records, including 3-9 in his first season, to have a chance to post eight victories for three straight years "So many great players came before me and started a lot of games," Good-Jones, who is known to sing on the field during games, told the media. "It's a huge honor. Words can't really describe what it means to me." Franz will look to power a run game that has slipped of late for the Wildcats, from 217.8 yards per game in the first five to 158 per contest in the last six.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1. LINE: Iowa State -4.5

ABOUT IOWA STATE (7-4, 5-3 Big 12): Brock Purdy may not get the attention of quarterbacks such as Jalen Hurts of Oklahoma or Joe Burrow of LSU, but is up there with the best in many categories. The sophomore is fourth in the country in total offense, passing yards and 300-yard games of total offense and is one of three along with Hurts and Ohio State's Justin Fields to have at least 26 passing touchdowns and eight rushing touchdowns on the season. "I am so impressed with Brock Purdy. I think he's a phenomenal football player," Kansas State coach Chris Klieman told the media. "It's fun because we have been on crossover tape with these guys all year so we have seen them against everybody and they look like the better team."

ABOUT KANSAS STATE (7-4, 4-4): Skylar Thompson has shown that he is more than capable of getting the job done with his arm and may need to do it in this game as the rushing attack, which has rode a roller coaster of late with 342 yards against Kansas followed by 51 against Texas, will be up against the No. 28 rushing defense in the country. Thompson, who has accounted for 12 touchdowns through the air and 10 on the ground, is the fourth quarterback in school history with 4,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards in their career, but the first to do it before his senior season. Dalton Schoen was held in check by Texas Tech last week but prior to that he had 67 or more receiving yards in five of the last six games for the Wildcats.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Sophomore TE Charlie Kolar leads all Big 12 players at his position in receptions (47), receiving yards (649) and receiving touchdowns (seven) for Iowa State, whose four losses have been by a combined 11 points - including one-point defeats to No. 7 Oklahoma and No. 20 Iowa.

2. Kansas State, which trails in the series 50-48-4, saw its 10-game winning streak over the Cyclones snapped with last season's 42-38 defeat.

3. The starting offensive linemen for the Wildcats have combined to make 149 starts led by Frantz (49), Tyler Mitchell (41) and Adam Holtorf (36).

PREDICTION: Iowa State 41, Kansas State 37
