Virginia Tech @ Boston College preview
Alumni Stadium
Last Meeting ( Oct 17, 2020 ) Boston College 14, Virginia Tech 40
Virginia Tech visits Boston College in a rare Friday night affair in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
The Hokies (4-4, 2-2 ACC) opened the season with three wins in four games, but dropped three in a row before bouncing back with a 26-17 win at Georgia Tech last Saturday.
Tre Turner's big day in the passing game highlighted the win as the junior made seven catches for 187 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Braxton Burmeister completed 15 of 25 passes for 254 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
"They have a little more bounce in their step," Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuente said. "I don't think it should change our approach in terms of what we try to correct. (But) it's OK to feel happy and to feel good."
Both teams are shooting for their fifth win of the season in pursuit of bowl eligibility. But Boston College remains winless in ACC play.
The Eagles (4-4, 0-4) come in riding a four-game losing streak that followed four straight victories to start the season. BC fell 21-6 at Syracuse last week to extend its longest skid under second-year coach Jeff Hafley.
The Eagles played two quarterbacks in their loss to the Orange and continue searching for a path forward without injured starter Phil Jurkovec.
Dennis Grosel started the game. Freshman Emmett Morehead made his collegiate debut on BC's third series of the game. Morehead finished 6-of-15 passing with 87 yards while Grosel -- who returned in the fourth quarter -- was 9-of-17 for 93 yards.
"I don't know what they're going to do (at quarterback)," Fuente said. "We'll have to be ready for whatever we'll see."
Hafley liked what he saw from Morehead, but wasn't ready to commit to the freshman moving forward.
"I think he's got a bright future, and I'm proud of the way he competed," Hafley said. "I think he'll continue to get better with the more reps that he gets."
Both Grosel and Morehead are pro-style quarterbacks with limited mobility, making Hafley's choice more difficult.
"Do I necessarily like playing two quarterbacks? No, I'd be lying to you if I told you I did," Hafley said. "I'm not a big fan of rotating quarterbacks unless you have one that runs and one that throws."
Virginia Tech leads the all-time series 19-10 and beat BC handily in a 40-14 result last season in Blacksburg, Va.
