During the last decade, Texas Christian's Amon G. Carter Stadium has been one of the toughest in which to play. In fact, the Horned Frogs' 37-4 home record (.902) since 2003 ranks fifth nationally.

Fifth-ranked TCU (1-0) hosts Tennessee Tech (0-1) in its home opener Saturday. The Frogs are coming off an impressive 30-21 victory over then-24th-ranked Oregon State on Saturday, while the Golden Eagles fell to No. 15 Arkansas, 44-3.

TCU and Tennessee Tech have never faced each other, but both teams have connections in this game.

TCU coach Gary Patterson was the linebackers coach for two seasons at Tennessee Tech from 1983-84. He also received his master’s degree in educational administration from Tennessee Tech.

And Tennessee Tech was one of five schools Patterson and TCU defensive coordinator Dick Bumpas worked at together. Bumpas was the defensive coordinator when Patterson was the linebackers coach.

Now, Patterson has established himself as one of the premier coaches in the country, and hopes to lead TCU to a second consecutive BCS bowl.

TCU has won eight straight home openers under Patterson, and has held opponents to 13 points or less in five of those games.

TCU, which was the nation’s top-ranked defense last season, picked up where it left off against Oregon State. The Frogs held the Beavers to 255 yards of total offense, and only 13 first downs.

The Horned Frogs also found a capable replacement for Jerry Hughes as Wayne Daniels had two sacks. It was his first two-sack game in his career.

Offensively, TCU got it done on the ground against Oregon State. The Frogs finished with 278 rushing yards and a 5.1 average per carry, highlighted by Ed Wesley’s 134 yards on 17 carries.

Senior quarterback Andy Dalton finished 17-of-27 for 175 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. Dalton rushed for eight first downs on third-down plays.

The Frogs will likely rely on their running game again against the Golden Eagles. TCU’s offensive line averages about 48 pounds more than Tennessee Tech’s defensive line.

Tennessee Tech’s defense showed its holes against Arkansas, giving up 44 points. But the Golden Eagles had two interceptions, three forced fumbles (one recovered) and a sack against the Razorbacks.

Offensively, the Golden Eagles didn’t turn the ball over. That was the lone positive as they rushed for only 79 yards, led by 31 from Cass Barnes. They had 108 yards passing, led by Tre Lamb’s 99 yards.

Tennessee Tech is the fifth Football Championship Subdivision opponent TCU has faced in Patterson’s 10 seasons.
