Mississippi @ Tulane preview
Mercedes-Benz Superdome
A game that was expected to be a simple warmup for Mississippi now makes the Rebels’ game against Tulane in New Orleans on Saturday something of a must-win situation.
Ole Miss (0-1) is still reeling from a 49-48 double-overtime loss to Football Championship Subdivision program Jacksonville State in its season opener, losing on a 2-point conversion. The Rebels led 31-10 at halftime.
Offensively, Ole Miss used a two-quarterback system against Jacksonville State, splitting time between sophomore Nathan Stanley and recent Oregon transfer Jeremiah Masoli. Stanley threw for three touchdowns in the first half, and finished 6-of-10 for 133 yards. Masoli finished the day 7-of-10 for 109 yards. With neither quarterback showing brilliance, coach Houston Nutt said he expects to continue to play both in tandem for the foreseeable future.
With Ole Miss still working out their quarterback situation, running back Brandon Bolden should be poised for a big day after opening the season with 138 all-purpose yards, including 104 rushing. Wide receivers Ferbia Allen (37 yards vs. Jacksonville State), Jesse Grandy (31 yards) and Melvin Harris will help stretch the field.
Turnovers in general were an issue for the Rebels as they had two fumbles and an interception.
On the other end, Tulane will look to build on its 27-21 victory over FCS program Southeastern Louisiana in its opener.
Tulane quarterback Ryan Griffin was 17-of-26 for a modest 129 yards. He also threw one interception, fumbled away another possession and was sacked four times, all without scoring a touchdown.
Running back Orleans Darkwa was the star for the Green Wave's offense, producing 116 all-purpose yards (75 rushing and 41 receiving) while scoring all three of Tulane's touchdowns.
Green Wave linebacker Trent Mackey, formerly a Duke recruit, turned in an impressive performance with 13 tackles and a forced fumble in his Tulane debut. Mackey earned Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week honors for his work. Starting sophomore defensive end Austen Jacks twisted his ankle in week one and is questionable.
Penalties could be a wild-card factor in this game. Tulane was called for nine penalties for 79 yards, while Mississippi went without a penalty against Jacksonville State.
