Morgan State @ Maryland preview
Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium
After sneaking out of Baltimore's M&T Bank Stadium with a 17-14 victory over Navy on Monday, the Maryland Terrapins take on another local program when Morgan State visits College Park on Saturday.
This is the first meeting between the in-state programs, and the Bears’ first game against a Football Bowl Subdivision team.
The Terps (1-0) must turn around a short work week, playing the Bears (1-0) five days after their opener.
Maryland's defensive performance was the highlight of the team's season opener against Navy, using a bend-but-don't break philosophy. The Terrapins allowed the Midshipmen to amass 429 yards of rushing, but also stopped Navy's offense in the red zone five times and forced Navy quarterback Ricky Dobbs to fumble three times.
Defensive back Kenny Tate and defensive lineman Joe Vellano stood out, earning ACC player of the week honors for their positions. Tate recorded a career-high 12 tackles and two forced fumbles and Vellano had 10 tackles and two sacks. Linebacker Alex Wujciak led the Terps with 18 total tackles and a pass break up.
Quarterback Jamarr Robinson showed off his legs against the Midshipmen in Monday's game, rushing for 103 yards and averaging 7.7 yards. However, Robinson tried few passes, completing just 2-of-5 with an interception. Against Morgan State, expect the Terps to push Robinson to air out the ball more.
Maryland will also lean on running back Davin Meggett, who had 105 yards rushing against Navy.
Morgan State opened the season with a tough 14-7 win against Bowie State, winning the game despite not scoring a touchdown.
Like Maryland, the Bears leaned on their defense to win their home opener. The Bears had three interceptions, four sacks and a safety. Allen Stephens and Brian Saunders led the Bears with a combined 12 tackles.
Bears placekicker Kemar Scarlett was the offensive star, kicking four field goals, including a 46-yard attempt in the fourth quarter to seal the victory. Scarlett's four field goals set a Morgan State game record.
Morgan State starting quarterback Donovan Dickerson was 16-of-32 for 109 yards, but struggled in the red zone and ended the day without a touchdown. With Maryland's defense shutting down Navy, the Bears will have to look at their Bowie State game and learn to be creative in their scoring opportunities.
