Charleston Southern @ Florida State preview

THE STORY: No. 4 Florida State has another warm-up game before facing its biggest test of the Jimbo Fisher era. The Seminoles host Charleston Southern, an FCS team, and will be looking to work out the kinks before next week's rematch with No. 1 Oklahoma. Florida State, which is ranked in the top five for the first time since 2002, opened its season with a 34-0 victory over Louisiana-Monroe. The Buccaneers, who are coming off a 62-0 loss to Central Florida, are 0-10 against FBS teams. This is the first meeting.

ABOUT FLORIDA STATE (1-0): Junior E.J. Manuel looked both polished and skittish in his seventh-career start last week when he was 22-of-34 for 252 yards with two touchdowns. The best news was last season’s leading rusher Chris Thompson (six carries, 33 yards) was able to play after missing most of training camp with a sore back. The Seminoles may utilize true freshman Devonta Freeman more to preserve Thompson, and seniors Ty Jones and Jermaine Thomas for more important games.

ABOUT CHARLESTON SOUTHERN (0-1): The Buccaneers, who went 3-8 in 2010 with two of those wins against Division II teams, allowed a staggering eight rushing touchdowns last week. That doesn’t bode well for their chances against Florida State, which has a talented stable of tailbacks.

EXTRA POINTS

1. The Seminoles will probably be looking ahead to the Sooners, who rolled to a 47-17 victory over Florida State in Norman last season.

2. Charleston Southern has 45 players from Florida on its roster.

3. Florida State will be without electric punt returner/defensive back Greg Reid and linebacker Telvin Smith, who were suspended for violating team rules.

PREDICTION: Florida State 44, Charleston Southern 0 - The Seminoles will use their potent rushing attack to build a big lead, and then rest for Oklahoma.
