Last Meeting ( Nov 6, 2010 ) California 20, Washington State 13

THE STORY: California quarterback Zach Maynard might be on a short leash, but he remains the starter for Saturday’s game against Washington State. Maynard threw four interceptions last week against UCLA as the Golden Bears lost for the fourth time in their last five games. While California’s aerial game has sputtered, Washington State’s passing attack ranks second in the Pac-12 and 10th nationally. The Cougars figure to be tested by California’s stout pass defense, which ranks first in the conference. Washington State has lost four straight after a promising start.

TV: CSN, Root Sports. LINE: California -9.5.

ABOUT WASHINGTON STATE (3-5, 1-4 Pac-12 North):
The Cougars lost 43-28 to No. 6 Oregon last week, but were encouraged by the effort. Quarterback Marshall Lobbestael passed for 337 yards and the Cougars had 125 yards rushing. Washington State has struggled in the red zone in recent weeks, however. The Cougars’ defense has also been a concern over the past three games, giving up 131 points and dropping to 84th nationally in total defense. Sophomore cornerback Damante Horton leads the Pac-12 with four interceptions, all in the past four games.

ABOUT CALIFORNIA (4-4, 1-4):
If Maynard struggles early, redshirt sophomore Allan Bridgford is next in line. Maynard ranks 11th in the conference in passing efficiency, and his 10 interceptions are second-most in the Pac-12. Keenan Allen, who ranks sixth nationally in receiving yards, needs 11 to post 1,000 receiving yards for the season. Linebacker Mychal Kendricks was a non-factor last week because of a suspension and injury, but is expected to be a key part of California’s defense against the Cougars.

EXTRA POINTS:

1. The Bears need two wins in their final four games to become bowl eligible, while the Cougars need to win three of their last four.

2. California leads the all-time series 42-25-5, including a current string of six consecutive wins in which the Bears have outscored the Cougars 218-91.

3. The Cougars have won only one conference road game in the past four years.

PREDICTION:
California 24, Washington State 17 - In a must-win situation for both teams, look for California’s defense to make a big play late and keep the Golden Bears' postseason hopes alive.
