Oklahoma @ Kansas preview

Last Meeting ( Oct 24, 2009 ) Oklahoma 35, Kansas 13

THE STORY: Top-ranked Oklahoma’s high-powered offense was on display last week in a 55-17 victory over then-No. 10 Texas, and this week the Sooners should have no trouble lighting up the scoreboard against Kansas. The Jayhawks have the country’s worst-ranked defense, both in points allowed (49.4) and yards (556), and they've given up more than 42 points in each of their last four games. With a win, Oklahoma would improve to 6-0 for the second straight season. The Sooners have won the last six meetings by 10 or more points and have won the game after the Red River Rivalry 12 straight times.

ABOUT OKLAHOMA (5-0, 2-0 Big 12): Senior wide receiver Ryan Broyles is just four catches away from breaking the NCAA record for receptions in a career. Purdue’s Taylor Stubblefield set the record with 316 in 2001-04, but at his current pace Broyles — who has 313 career catches — should break that mark by halftime. He’s averaging 9.4 receptions and had nine for 122 yards and a touchdown in the Sooners’ blowout of Texas. Landry Jones threw for three scores against the Longhorns and now has 11 touchdown passes in the last three games.

ABOUT KANSAS (2-3, 0-2 Big 12):
Just when Kansas thought its defense couldn’t get any worse, it did. The Jayhawks lost 70-12 last week at Oklahoma State and gave up 600 yards in the process. The Cowboys scored touchdowns on all eight first-half possessions and took a 56-7 lead into halftime before inserting their reserves in the third quarter. The loss was the third straight for Kansas, which began the season with a pair of promising home wins against McNeese State and Northern Illinois. It’s been a struggle ever since, and the schedule, which includes upcoming games against No. 18 Kansas State and No. 21 Texas, won’t give the Jayhawks room to breathe.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Kansas has lost its last three games by an average of 31.6 points.

2. Bob Stoops recorded his 43rd victory over a ranked opponent against Texas, tying Barry Switzer’s school record. Stoops is 43-17 all-time against Top 25 teams.

3. The Jayhawks have allowed 18 rushing touchdowns and 18 passing touchdowns. They’re allowing nearly 13 yards per pass attempt and 6.2 yards per carry.

PREDICTION:
Oklahoma 61, Kansas 13 -- This one will get ugly quickly because the Jayhawks simply can’t stop anyone, let alone one of the best offenses in the country.
