Southern @ Georgia preview

Sanford Stadium

The questions surrounding Georgia quarterback Greyson Lambert seem to have disappeared after the transfer misfired on just one pass in a lopsided win a week ago. The sixth-ranked Bulldogs figure to have a similarly easy time as they host Southern on Saturday in a brief respite from SEC play. Lambert completed 24-of-25 passes as the Bulldogs crushed South Carolina 52-20 last week, Lambert setting a NCAA record for highest completion percentage while finishing with 330 yards and three touchdowns.

It was a far cry from his performance at Vanderbilt a week earlier, when Lambert did not complete a pass in the first half, but the reigning SEC co-offensive player of the week completed 20 consecutive passes in a performance that made the Georgia offense downright scary. Coupled with the usual antics of sophomore running back Nick Chubb, who churned out his 11th consecutive 100-yard performance, the Bulldogs are averaging 477.7 yards of total offense and 44.7 points. With a home showdown with 12th-ranked Alabama looming, Georgia will look to put away Southern quickly and secure head coach Mark Richt’s 140th career victory at the school. The Jaguars have won back-to-back games - scoring 50 points in each victory - and feature senior playmaker Willie Quinn, who has two touchdowns on special teams through three games.

ABOUT SOUTHERN (2-1): Quinn won SWAC special teams player of the week after a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in an opening-week loss to Louisiana Tech, has 10 receptions for 153 yards and threw a touchdown in a Week 2 victory over Mississippi Valley State. The Jaguars finished with 675 yards of total offense in last week’s 50-31 win over Jackson State. Quarterback Austin Howard passed for a career-best 395 yards in that one, rushing for two scores and throwing a touchdown pass in earning conference offensive player-of-the-week honors.

ABOUT GEORGIA (3-0): Chubb leads the SEC and ranks third in the nation with 468 rushing yards, surpassing the 2,000-career yard mark in his 16th career game last week. Receiver Malcolm Mitchell recorded his first 100-yard game since 2012 with 122 yards and a touchdown last week, and sophomore Sony Michel caught a pair of touchdown passes to give him 11 scores in 11 career contests. Linebackers Jordan Jenkins and Leonard Floyd have combined for 32 1/2 career sacks, fueling a defense that has forced five turnovers while allowing 48 points in three games.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Chubb has averaged 162.8 yards rushing during his streak of triple-digit performances, which has come in his first 11 career starts.

2. After his performance against the Gamecocks, Lambert is 43-of-58 passing through three games for 587 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions.

3. The Bulldogs, who have never faced Southern, are 40-2 at home against non-conference foes since 2001.

PREDICTION: Georgia 57, Southern 17
