Boise State @ BYU preview
LaVell Edwards Stadium
Last Meeting ( Oct 24, 2014 ) Brigham Young 30, Boise State 55
Standout Brigham Young quarterback Taysom Hill is out for the season and that gives opening-game hero Tanner Mangum the opportunity to make his first career against his hometown school when the Cougars host the No. 22 Broncos on Saturday. Mangum replaced Hill (foot) and tossed the wild 42-yard Hail Mary scoring pass to Mitch Mathews to give the Cougars an improbable 33-28 win over Nebraska.
Mangum is a redshirt freshman who served a two-year church mission but his background includes being named co-MVP of the Elite 11 summer quarterback camp in 2011 when future Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston of Florida State also was an MVP. "It is pretty special," Mangum said on a conference call of facing the Broncos, one of the runner-ups in the recruiting battle for his services. "Obviously, where I am from everybody is a huge Boise State fan, so I know I will have a lot of people rooting against me. But that is fine. I have to remind myself that it doesn't matter who we are playing." Boise State opened its season with a 16-13 victory over Washington and former coach Chris Petersen. The Broncos have won 10 consecutive games, the nation's second-longest active winning streak behind Ohio State (14).

ABOUT BOISE STATE (1-0): Sophomore quarterback Ryan Finley made his first career start in the win against the Huskies but passed for just 129 yards and one interception and no Broncos wideout even had 30 yards receiving. Boise State needs to figure out how to get the ball in the hands of senior receiver Shane Williams-Rhodes (two receptions, 16 yards) while sophomore running back Jeremy McNichols rushed for 89 yards in his first game as the replacement for NFL draftee Jay Ajayi. The defense was solid as it held Washington to just 179 yards - including 29 on the ground - while standout junior defensive end Kamalei Correa had a sack as he aims to build off last season's 12-sack campaign.
ABOUT BRIGHAM YOUNG (1-0): Mangum was 7-for-11 for 111 yards in relief of Hill and is a better pure passer but not as nimble a runner. Junior-college transfer receiver Nick Kurtz had a strong debut with five receptions for 123 yards while Mathews added three receptions for 69 yards as the Cougars rolled up 511 total yards against the Cornhuskers. The defense is led by senior defensive end Bronson Kaufusi (16.5 career sacks), while senior nose tackle Logan Taele had 2.5 tackles for losses in the opener and the return of sophomore outside linebacker Sione Takitaki from a suspension (on summer theft charges) will help the pass rush.
EXTRA POINTS
1. Boise State has won four of the previous five meetings, including a 55-30 home win last season.
2. The Cougars are 62-5 when scoring 30 or more points in coach Bronco Mendenhall's 10-plus seasons.
3. Broncos senior S Darian Thompson recorded his 15th career interception in the opener, tied for fourth most in school history.
