Tulsa @ Tulane preview
Yulman Stadium
Last Meeting ( Aug 28, 2014 ) Tulane 31, Tulsa 38
Tulsa has one more chance to become bowl eligible and it’s in the regular-season finale at Tulane on Friday. The Golden Hurricane are on their third shot to claim the single victory after surrendering a total of 93 points in losses to Cincinnati and Navy in the last two games.
Tulsa is attempting to earn its first bowl berth since a trip to the Liberty Bowl in 2012 capped a string of three straight, and the team is not overlooking the Green Wave. “It’s a good Tulane team, a team that we have battled it out with the last couple years when we’ve played them,” Tulsa defensive end Derrick Alexander told reporters. “So we just have to get prepared for them, they’re going to get prepared for us, and we’ll see who comes out on top.” The Golden Hurricane won’t have to worry about the type of offensive onslaught they faced from opponents like Oklahoma, Memphis, Houston, Cincinnati and Navy this season from Tulane, which ranks 124th in FBS in total offense and has dropped six of its last seven games. “I have to look at the schematic, what we are doing, and all the facets of it, what we are coaching, who we are coaching, and how we are coaching them,” Green Wave coach Curtis Johnson told reporters. “The offense is definitely going to be very scrutinized this offseason.”
TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPNU. LINE: Tulsa -6.
ABOUT TULSA (5-6, 2-5 AAC): The Golden Hurricane rushed for over 260 yards in back-to-back games before being held to 78 yards on the ground in last week’s 44-21 loss to Navy. Zack Langer scored a pair of short touchdowns on the ground to lift his season total to 16 but the rest of the offense had trouble generating big plays. “We just have to really go into practice this week and focus on getting all the little things right, getting all the details right, and playing our football,” Langer told reporters. “If we play football the way that we are supposed to play, we’re a pretty good team, so we just have to go out and do that.”
ABOUT TULANE (3-8, 1-6): The beleaguered offense will be operating without its usual quarterback in the finale as Tanner Lee (broken fingers) will sit out. Johnson plans on using at least two and possibly three quarterbacks, with Jordy Joseph getting the start and freshman Glenn Cuiellette backing him up. “I think Glenn will be out there as well so we can see what he can do, and Devin (Powell) will be out there as well,” Johnson told reporters. “Right now, we are planning on playing (Cuiellette) no matter what. It’s time to see what Glenn can do.”
