Austin Peay @ Virginia Tech preview

After needing overtime to secure a season-opening victory, the Hokies face an easier task in their second contest. Virginia Tech rallied for a 20-17 overtime victory over Georgia Tech, getting an early leg up in the race for the ACC Coastal Division title. Now the Hokies host FCS opponent Austin Peay of the Ohio Valley Conference. Virginia Tech quarterback Logan Thomas passed for 230 yards and two touchdowns. Kicker Cody Journell booted the game-tying and game-winning field goals, earning ACC specialist-of-the-week honors. It wasn’t as thrilling or as successful an opener for Austin Peay, which started its season with a 49-10 loss at Western Kentucky. The Governors allowed 596 total yards and never recovered from allowing 35 points in the first half.

ABOUT AUSTIN PEAY (0-1, 0-0 OVC): One week after allowing 352 yards passing against Western Kentucky, the Governors will face a big challenge in slowing down Thomas. Austin Peay did find some success on the ground against Western Kentucky with Wesley Kitts gaining 104 yards, 68 coming on a touchdown run. The Governors were picked to finish last in the nine-team OVC in the preseason coaches poll.

ABOUT VIRGINIA TECH (1-0, 1-0 ACC): Virginia Tech beat the Yellow Jackets despite struggling to get its running attack going. The Hokies gained just 96 yards on the ground, but Thomas – who finished fifth in the ACC in passing yards a year ago (3,013) – looked sharp. Linebacker Jake Tyler earned ACC linebacker-of-the-week honors after recording 17 tackles against Georgia Tech.

1. Austin Peay’s lone game against a ranked team was a 70-3 thrashing by Wisconsin in 2010.

2. Michael Holmes led Virginia Tech in rushing in the opener with 54 yards on 13 carries. Thomas added 40 yards rushing.
