Lamar @ Texas A&M preview

Kyle Field

It took just one game for Kenny Hill to answer the question: "What happens to Texas A&M now that Johnny Manziel is gone?" Hill will look to build upon a performance for the ages Saturday night as the No. 13 Aggies welcome Lamar to new-look Kyle Field. The sophomore QB threw for a school-record 511 yards and three touchdowns in his first start of the post-Manziel era, leading the Aggies to a convincing 52-28 win over the then-No. 9 South Carolina Gamecocks.

The key to Hill's success against South Carolina: spreading the ball around. Twelve different receivers caught at least one pass, while five finished with at least five receptions - led by Malcome Kennedy's 14 grabs for 137 yards. Texas A&M now goes from facing a Gamecocks club ranked in the top-10 nationally to tangling with a Cardinals team that opened with a 42-27 win over Grambling State but was routed 59-3 by Oklahoma State in its last game against a ranked foe.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, SEC Network. LINE: None.

ABOUT LAMAR (1-0): Cardinals quarterback Caleb Berry had himself quite a week, earning Southland Conference player of the week honors while becoming the school's all-time leader in passing touchdowns with 43. Berry completed 27-of-45 passes for 389 yards and five TDs against the Tigers in a game that left head coach Ray Woodward somewhat dissatisfied despite the outcome. "The first half was very frustrating because we left so many points on the field," he said. "(But) we made some good adjustments at halftime and were able to overcome our mistakes."

ABOUT TEXAS A&M (1-0): For all the concerns about how Hill would handle the pressure of following in Manziel's footsteps, Aggies offensive coordinator Jake Spavital said it didn't take long for his prized QB to get comfortable. "I started off with ... two easy passes to build his confidence up, but when he went to walk out there and you looked in his eyes he didn't have any nerves in there," Spavital said earlier this week. "After those two passes I said, 'Let's roll.'" Saturday marks the Aggies' first home game since Kyle Stadium underwent extensive renovations.

EXTRA POINTS

1. The Texas schools have never faced each other despite being just 180 miles apart.

2. Hill threw for the third-most passing yards in the nation during the opening week, behind only Western Kentucky's Brandon Doughty (569) and Washington State's Connor Halliday (532).

3. Texas A&M made good on 12-of-19 third-down opportunities a week ago after converting just 50.3 percent of their chances in 2013.

PREDICTION: Texas A&M 59, Lamar 10
