Stanford @ Army preview

Fourth-ranked Stanford looks to extend its winning streak to 10 games when it travels to Army on Saturday in the first meeting between the schools since 1979. The Cardinal picked up where they left off in 2012 by trouncing San Jose State last weekend 34-13. It gave coach David Shaw a 24-4 mark since taking over at Stanford, including wins in his first three season openers, making Shaw the first Cardinal coach to do that in almost 80 years.

It has been nearly 41 seasons since Army knocked off a ranked opponent and almost 51 years since the Black Knights hosted a team ranked in the top five nationally. Army enters on a sour note after suffering a 40-14 loss at Ball State last weekend. The Black Knights turned the ball over three times and gave up 325 passing yards.

ABOUT STANFORD (1-0): Kevin Hogan threw for 207 yards and two touchdowns and Tyler Gaffney had 104 yards rushing and a pair of scores in his return to the program after a year playing professional baseball in the Cardinal's season-opening victory. They were key figures in an efficient effort that saw Stanford convert 12-of-15 third downs and go without a punt for the first time since Sept. 17, 1994. "We don't worry about trying to score as many points as we can," Shaw told reporters. "We want to control the ball. We want to score on every possession and we want to play great defense."

ABOUT ARMY (1-1): The top rushing team in the nation last season amassed 363 yards on the ground against Ball State. Larry Dixon had 71 of those yards on a touchdown run less than a minute into the contest, but the Cardinals scored the next 37 points. In addition to the three turnovers, Army committed eight penalties after a season-opening win over Morgan State in which it had zero turnovers and penalties.

1. The all-time series is tied 5-5. The first meeting was played at Yankee Stadium in 1928.

2. Hogan has thrown 102 passes over his last four-plus games without an interception.

3. Army is 6-20 since a win in the 2010 Armed Forces Bowl.
