Wofford @ South Carolina preview
Williams-Brice Stadium
Last Meeting ( Sep 20, 2008 ) Wofford 13, South Carolina 23
After completing its league schedule with a win over Arkansas last week, South Carolina begins a two-game, non-conference jaunt Saturday by hosting in-state FCS foe Wofford, which has proven to be a surprisingly tough opponent in recent years. The 11th-ranked Gamecocks secured a 6-2 Southeastern Conference record by rolling past the Razorbacks, 38-20. It marks just the second time in 20 years that South Carolina has won at least six SEC games. Additionally, the team has won eight games in three straight seasons for the first time in 110 years of playing football in Columbia. The Gamecocks will be trying to avoid a look-ahead effort; a trip to hated rival Clemson on Nov. 24 looms, and the Tigers have been on a roll. The Terriers earned a share of the Southern Conference crown with an overtime win against Chattanooga last week.TV: 1 p.m., ET, ESPN3. LINE: No line
ABOUT WOFFORD (8-2): The Terriers lost 27-20 at Williams-Brice Stadium in 2006 in a game that saw them drive deep into Gamecocks territory in the final minute before turning the ball over. Wofford was within three points late in a return visit in 2008 before South Carolina secured a 23-13 win. This year's Terriers are led by running back Eric Breitenstein, who has 1,528 yards and 15 touchdowns on the ground, leading a rushing attack that averages 357.1 yards per game. Wofford also boasts the top scoring defense in the Southern Conference.
ABOUT SOUTH CAROLINA (8-2): Following back-to-back difficult trips to Louisiana State and Florida, during which the Gamecocks scored just 33 points, the offense has begun to flourish again. South Carolina has scored 38 points in consecutive games while quarterback Connor Shaw posted his top two passing games this season in terms of yardage. He had a pair of touchdowns in the victory over Arkansas and is now 9-0 as a starter at home. A win would give head coach Steve Spurrier 64 at South Carolina, tying Rex Enright's school record.
EXTRA POINTS
1. Regardless of the outcome, Wofford awaits word on whether it will make the FCS playoffs. With help, it can win its league title outright and earn an automatic bid. Otherwise, it will learn its destiny through the FCS Selection Show on Sunday afternoon.
2. The Gamecocks have won 15 straight meetings. But the teams have met just three times since 1957.
3. South Carolina's 10-game home win streak is the third-longest in school history. It had a 15-game run from 1978-80 and a 13-gamer from 1986-88.
PREDICTION: South Carolina 37, Wofford 16
