San Jose @ New York preview
Madison Square Garden
Last Meeting ( Dec 12, 2019 ) NY Rangers 6, San Jose 3
The New York Rangers have won six of their last seven games - a run that has them thinking playoffs - as they host the San Jose Sharks on Saturday. New York defeated Metropolitan rival Carolina 5-2 on Friday behind hot rookie goaltender Igor Shesterkin and is five points out of the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference, but has three teams to pass.
The Rangers signed Artemi Panarin to a seven-year $81.5 million contract during the offseason and the left wing continues to pay dividends as he had a goal and an assist Friday, giving him 401 points in 381 career games. San Jose began its four-game trip through the Northeast corridor with a 2-1 loss to New Jersey on Thursday as it played without Logan Couture (ankle), Erik Karlsson (thumb), Tomas Hertl (knee) and Evander Kane (suspension). "Those are the games where you sort of see the lack of offense, that lack of skill that is out of our lineup," Sharks interim coach Bob Boughner told reporters. "You can get by some nights with it, get a power play goal or get a couple of bounces and you get some puck luck." New York has won four straight meetings after a 6-3 victory at San Jose on Dec. 12 behind Panarin's third career hat trick and two goals from Mika Zibanejad.
