New Jersey @ Detroit preview

Little Caesars Arena

Last Meeting ( Feb 13, 2020 ) Detroit 1, New Jersey 4

The New Jersey Devils and Detroit Red Wings both occupy the basement of their respective divisions in the Eastern Conference, so it was hardly surprising that both clubs were busy at Monday afternoon's trade deadline. The Devils continued their roster shuffle with two more deals before heading out on a five-game road trip that begins Tuesday at Detroit.

New Jersey, which traded captain Andy Greene and Blake Coleman just over a week ago and dealt former MVP Taylor Hall in mid-December, shipped defenseman Sami Vatanen to Carolina and veteran forward Wayne Simmonds to Buffalo on Monday. Detroit, owner of the worst record in hockey, also jumped into the fray by sending forward Andreas Athanasiou to Edmonton on Monday after trading defenseman Mike Green to the Oilers late Sunday in a separate deal. The Red Wings, who have dropped 16 of 19 (3-15-1) and scored more than three goals only once in that span, will play six of their next seven at home. The Devils have won two in a row and three of four overall and have dominated the season series against Detroit, winning both meetings by a combined 9-2 margin.

TIME: 7:30 p.m. ET. TV: MSG-Plus, FS Detroit

ABOUT THE DEVILS (24-27-10): New Jersey received defenseman Fredrik Claesson, forward prospect Janne Kuokkanen and a conditional fourth-round draft pick in exchange for Vatanen, who has been out since Feb. 1 with a bruised leg. Kuokkanen has been held off the scoresheet in 11 NHL games but the 21-year-old Finn has 12 goals and 42 points in 52 games at Charlotte of the American Hockey League this season while four-year veteran Claesson spent this entire season with the AHL club. Defenseman Will Butcher (upper body) has been ruled out for the five-game road trip.

ABOUT THE RED WINGS (15-4-4): In exchange for Athanasiou and prospect Ryan Kuffner, Detroit received center Sam Gagner and two second-round draft picks -- one this year and one in 2021 -- while Green fetched a conditional fourth-round selection. "We have to give up something if we want to be a good team three, four, five years down the road," said general manager Steve Yzerman, who has 10 picks in this year's draft. Gagner, who matched his career high with 18 goals in 2016-17, has five goals and 12 points in 36 games this season.

OVERTIME

1. Red Wings C Dylan Larkin ended an eight-game drought with a pair of goals in Sunday's loss to Calgary.

2. New Jersey traded Louis Domingue to Vancouver in exchange for fellow G Zane McIntyre.

3. Detroit claimed F Dmytro Timashov off waivers from Toronto.

PREDICTION: Devils 3, Red Wings 1
