The Colorado Avalanche have rallied from multi-goal deficits in back-to-back contests only to fall in overtime on both occasions and see their winless skid extend to a season-high five games (0-3-2). With losses in nine of their last 11 outings (2-6-3), the tumbling Avalanche bid to stop their slide on Wednesday when they play the third contest of a four-game homestand against the San Jose Sharks.

"There comes a point where there is a breaking point, and I think for us it's time to wake up. It's time to take care of some of these wins," defenseman Erik Johnson said after Monday's 3-2 setback to Los Angeles dropped the Avalanche to 1-8 in overtime this season. Nathan MacKinnon scored for the 10th time in the third period to pull even with captain Gabriel Landeskog for the team lead in goals (24). San Jose visits the Pepsi Center for the lone time this season after falling in regulation for just the second time in 11 games (7-2-2) with an 8-5 loss to Calgary on Monday. "Every time we scored, they answered," captain Joe Pavelski said. "It was one of those weird nights where everything that was directed at the net found the way in."

TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network

ABOUT THE SHARKS (21-13-7): Defenseman Erik Karlsson set up a pair of third-period goals to extend his point streak to 10 games (one goal, 15 assists) and move one point behind Tomas Hertl, who had an assist versus the Flames to give him a point in four consecutive contests. Blue-liner Brent Burns recorded his second straight two-point performance by scoring and setting up a goal, lifting his club-best totals in both assists (34) and points (40). Joonas Donskoi has also notched multi-point performances in two consecutive contests and pushed his point streak to three games after tallying twice versus Calgary.

ABOUT THE AVALANCHE (19-13-8): Colorado coach Jared Bednar refused to let one of his top stars off the hook following Monday's setback, pointing the finger at Mikko Rantanen for his ill-fated decision to make a late line change in overtime. "You can't let guys get in behind you in overtime, you just can't," Bednar said. "You can't make the change if a guy is standing there. For me, that is not structural, that is mental, mental mistakes. To be honest with you, most of our overtime losses have been the exact same way." Rantanen, who leads the team with 45 assists and 62 points, set up MacKinnon's third-period goal versus the Kings to extend his point streak to four games.

OVERTIME

1. San Jose C Logan Couture has recorded 23 points (nine goals, 14 assists) in 27 career encounters with Colorado.

3. The Sharks own a 7-4-0 mark against Central Division representatives.

PREDICTION: Avalanche 4, Sharks 2
