UFC 310: Ciryl Gane vs Alexander Volkov Odds, Picks & Predictions

While Volkov has had better results since losing to Gane a few years back, this is not a great matchup for his style. Gane should still emerge victorious but it will likely go to the judges.

Gane vs Volkov prediction and pick

Fight analysis

When Ciryl Gane beat Alexander Volkov three years ago, few thought a rematch was necessary. It was a clinical performance from Gane, who was too fast and too sharp for Volkov, winning every round on two scorecards and four on the other. Since then, however, the fortunes of these two fighters have shifted, and the lack of depth in the heavyweight division has made this rematch a necessary step to thin out the competition.

Volkov has gone 4-1 since that loss, with his sole defeat coming against Tom Aspinall. He’s coming off a dominant win over Sergei Pavlovich, where he picked apart one of the division’s most dangerous strikers without a scratch to show for it while likely permanently altering Pavlovich’s career for the worse. Volkov is a technical striker who lands stinging shots, doesn’t overextend himself, and sticks to the game plan, always ready to transition seamlessly from offense to defense.

Gane hasn’t been as fortunate, with his shortcomings arriving at the top of the mountain. He’s gone 3-2 since their last fight, with losses in title bouts to Francis Ngannou and Jon Jones. However, his striking remains as sharp as ever, as both champions used their ground skills to defeat him. As far as pure striking goes, Gane might be the best technician in the division, and his conditioning allows him to maintain pressure and activity for five rounds while barely breaking a sweat.

While Volkov may have momentum, he still faces an uphill battle in terms of style. In their first fight, Volkov tried to slow Gane down with leg kicks — landing 56 of them — but still got picked apart when it became clear Gane wasn’t slowing down. Gane remains the faster and more versatile fighter, which should make this another high-level chess match that unfolds similarly to their first meeting.

Where the winner fits into the current heavyweight title picture remains to be seen, but this fight should clarify who could emerge as a dark horse in 2025. I believe that fighter will be Gane, who remains a bad stylistic matchup for Volkov and should come out on top once again.

Best best analysis

In 48 fights, Volkov has only been knocked out twice, largely due to his sharp counterstriking and defensive awareness. Gane, on the other hand, earns his stoppages through accumulation rather than sheer knockout power. Both fighters favor a methodical approach, so it’s unlikely they’ll abandon their styles to engage in a brawl that wouldn’t benefit either of them. Ultimately, Gane has Volkov’s number, and he’ll once again outwork him from bell to bell to win by decision.
