Road to the WNBA Commissioner's Cup

The defending champs and WNBA title odds favorites find themselves in a prime position to add to their hardware collection, with the Las Vegas Aces going 9-1 in Commissioner's Cup play out of the West. That 9-1 stand adds to their WNBA-best record of 24-3 with the most recent L coming at the hands of a Sabrina Ionescu masterclass.

Ionescu and the New York Liberty will meet Vegas in the final of this in-season tournament thanks to a 7-3 record in the East during the tournament's play. The Liberty had to work a little harder however as their record was tied with the Connecticut Sun, but a head-to-record tiebreaker in which N.Y. won 2-0 gave them the spot in the final.

This game should prove to be a dogfight, with the league's top two teams currently tied 1-1 in their regular season series.

WNBA Commissioner's Cup explained

The Commissioner's Cup consists of 60 games — 10 for each team — throughout the first half of the regular season, from May 19-July 12. The first home and road game each team plays against in-conference teams will count toward Cup standings.

The teams from each conference with the best record in those 10 games will then face off in the Commissioner's Cup final, which will take place on August 15, 2023.

The winning team's players will receive a $500k bonus, along with the Commissioner's Cup trophy.

Understanding WNBA Commissioner's Cup odds

Sportsbooks will post odds for the WNBA Commissioner's Cup shortly before the regular season begins. These odds are adjusted throughout the season as players switch teams, show steady improvement, or are injured. Sportsbooks will also adjust the WNBA odds based on handle and liability to certain teams.

WNBA Commissioner's Cup odds will usually look like this:

  • New York Liberty +270

This means that on a $100 bet, you'll stand to win $2700 if the Liberty win the Commissioner's Cup. If it's close to the end of the tournament and the WNBA has a particularly dominant team, you might see a minus sign (-) ahead of its odds.

  • Las Vegas Aces -315

This means you have to bet $315 to win $100 on an Aces Commissioner's Cup win.
