Most common sports betting revenue terms
- Handle: The total amount of money wagered by bettors at a sportsbook during a given period, including all bets placed, regardless of whether they win or lose. The handle is often used as a measure of the size of the sports betting market.
For example, if a sportsbook accepts $100,000 in wagers on the Super Bowl, the handle for that event is $100,000. - Revenue (gross): The amount of money that a sportsbook earns from its operations — after payouts to winning bettors have been made.
Revenue is calculated by subtracting the amount of payouts from the total handle. - Hold: The percentage of the handle that a sportsbook keeps as revenue.
For example, if a sportsbook has a handle of $1 million and revenue of $100,000 (paying out $900,000 in winnings), the hold would be 10%. - Tickets/Receipts: The total amount of individual bets placed during a specific period, independent of how much money was wagered overall.

Breaking sports betting news
Global sports betting market size
The global sports betting market size has grown steadily over the years and is expected to rise by approximately US$144 billion by 2027, according to a recent study from TechNavio, a global technology research firm.
An earlier report by Grand View Research, Inc., pegged the global sports betting market growth to reach US$182.12 billion by 2030. The report estimates that the market will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.3% from 2023 to 2030. Several factors drive this growth, including the increasing popularity of sports worldwide, the legalization of sports betting in several countries, and the rapid ascent of online sports betting.
The removal of legal barriers provided the spark for sports betting's growth across the United States and has fundamentally contributed to the growth of the global sports betting market. Since the Supreme Court's 2018 ruling, more than two dozen states have legalized sports betting, leading to a rapid expansion of the market in the country.
Asia Pacific
Research firm TechNavio predicts 42% of the total market share will be driven by Asia, and the accompanying increase in digital adoption and overall interest in betting.
The Asia Pacific region is currently the largest market for sports betting, accounting for over 35% of the global market share.
Europe
The European continent stands as the second-largest market, with the United Kingdom, Germany, and Italy among the largest markets in the region.
North America
In the first fiscal quarter of 2023, the American Gaming Association reported quarterly revenue record of $16.6 billion. That marks the eighth consecutive quarter of growth for the US sports betting industry. As of January 2023, 36 states in the U.S. have legalized sports betting, promoting strong regional market growth. The betting sites Canada and its provinces oversee are smaller in comparison to Ontario sports betting, which boasts a one-of-a-kind iGaming market, with access to 31 legal sports betting sites.
Online vs. offline sports betting revenue
Typically, offline brick-and-mortar sports betting outlets boast physical locations where customers can place their bets in person, while online sports betting operators allow customers to bet via a website or mobile app.
Offline or retail sportsbooks have an advantage in terms of advertising and promotion due to their physical presence, whereas online betting sites offer added flexibility and convenience for customers.
The positives outweigh the negatives when considering online betting sites versus leveraging offline channels like retail sportsbooks. We've highlighted the pros and cons of comparing the two types of sports betting platforms.
Factors affecting sports betting revenue
Here are five of the biggest factors that affect sports betting revenue on a monthly basis:
- Popularity of events: The popularity of current sports events is one of the most important factors affecting sports betting revenue. The more popular — and regionally relevant — a sport or event is, the higher the betting volume at regulated sportsbooks.
Major events such as the Super Bowl, World Cup, The Masters, or March Madness, can generate millions of dollars in revenue for sportsbooks — but it should be noted that the Super Bowl is the busiest single-day event, while U.S. states experience higher handles (on average) during the NFL season compared to when there is no football happening. - Live streaming: The ability to watch the game via live streaming is an essential feature that affects sports betting revenue.
With live streaming becoming ever more prevalent, bettors who have access to watching the game will have a greater interest in placing wagers before the game starts, and they can follow the action in real time and adjust their betting strategies accordingly, leading to more bets — and more revenue — for sportsbooks.
More operators are adopting live streaming feeds directly on their sites, with Caesars Sportsbook offering NFL live streams and FanDuel offering the MLB.TV free game of the day. - Odds and lines: The betting odds and lines offered by sportsbooks play a significant role in sports betting revenue.
If the lines are not favorable, bettors are less likely to place bets, resulting in lower revenue. On the other hand, if sportsbooks offer attractive and competitive prices, more people are likely to place bets, leading to increased revenue. - Promotions and bonuses: Sports betting promotions and bonuses offered by sportsbooks are an effective way to attract new customers — and retain existing ones.
Sportsbooks often offer new-customer sign-up bonuses, second chance or bonus bets, odds boosts, and other promotions that can increase the number of bets placed and boost revenue. - Regulatory environment: The regulatory environment can also impact sports betting revenue.
In some markets, heavily regulated or restrictive sports betting may limit the number of people who can place bets, where they can place bets, how they can place bets, and what they can place bets on. In other markets, sports betting may be less restrictive, leading to more competition, more active users, more available markets, and increased sports betting revenue.
Sports betting revenue vs. casino betting revenue
Sports betting revenue and casino betting revenue can vary depending on several factors, including the popularity of sports events, the size and location of casinos, and the regulatory framework in different regions. What's the primary difference? Casino betting revenue generally tends to be significantly higher than sports betting revenue.
Casino betting encompasses various games, including slot machines, table games (such as blackjack, poker, and roulette), and other forms of gambling. These games are available throughout the year, and the casinos' operational hours are often 24/7. As a result, the revenue generated by casinos tends to be substantial.
On the other hand, sports betting involves wagering on the outcome of sporting events, such as football, basketball, baseball, and horse racing. The availability of popular sports events influences sports betting revenue, the seasonality of certain sports, and the number of games or races taking place.
In some regions, sports betting may be limited to specific sports or events and may be subject to certain regulatory restrictions. This can impact the overall revenue generated by sports betting. However, with the increasing legalization and popularity of sports betting, its revenue has steadily grown in recent years.
While sports betting revenue has increased, it still needs to catch up to the revenue generated by commercial casino betting. This is mainly due to the wider variety of gambling options available in casinos and the constant availability of casino games.
It's worth noting that the exact revenue figures for sports betting and casino betting can vary significantly based on the specific jurisdiction and market conditions. Different regions have different regulations and gambling cultures, which can influence the relative proportions of revenue between sports betting and casino betting.
Trends and future of sports betting revenue
Here are some trends to consider for the near future of sports betting revenue:
- More markets: The United States has seen a rapid expansion in the number of states legalizing sports betting since PASPA was repealed in 2018. As of May 2023, sports betting is now legal in 33 states (and DC), and we'll see more states with legal sports betting in the next few years.
- Increased revenues: With the growth of legal sports betting, revenue from the industry is expected to increase significantly.
In the American Gaming Association's February 2023 revenue tracker, gross gaming revenue from sports betting increased by 71.5% year-over-year, while a report by Grand View Research revealed that the global sports betting market generated $83.7 billion in revenue in 2022, and based on a compound annual growth rate of 10.3%, is expected to generate $182.1 billion in 2030 — with the United States expected to have a slightly higher CAGR. - New ways to bet: Users are trending more and more towards using mobile devices and searching for the best mobile sports betting app to place bets, while there are also more wagering options than ever before.
Gone are the days of just betting pre-game sides and totals: Player props and same-game parlays are gaining more revenue share each and every month, while an increase in live, in-game bets — and the rise of micro-betting (wagering on the outcome of specific plays within a sporting event) — give people a chance to wager more money more frequently. - Analytics: The use of advanced data analytics and AI is becoming more prevalent in the sports betting industry. Both operators and bettors are using these tools to make more accurate predictions, which leads to more focus on setting lines (and jumping on perceived edges) about the outcome of sporting events. This trend is likely to continue, with data analytics playing a crucial role in the success of sports betting companies.

Sports betting revenue tracker FAQ
The sports that generate the most sports betting revenue can vary depending on factors such as the sport's popularity, the betting market's size, and the timing and frequency of significant events. Football stands as the most popular sport for betting in the United States, with the NFL generating the highest revenue. The Super Bowl alone is one of the world's most-watched and bet-on sporting events. Basketball is also a popular sport for betting, particularly in the United States where the NBA lays claim to the top basketball league in the world.
In terms of value, the global sports betting market generated approximately $83.7 billion in revenue in 2022, and is expected to yield $182.1 billion in 2030.
Sports betting revenue varies greatly depending on the region, market, and size of the industry. However, in many jurisdictions, sports betting can generate significant revenue and contribute to the overall economy. Compared to other industries, sports betting revenue may not be as significant. For example, in 2020, the global video game industry was estimated to generate over $159 billion in revenue. Meanwhile, the global film industry was estimated to generate over $100 billion in revenue in 2020.
The popularity of select sports events cannot be overlooked, with the Super Bowl and World Cup among the largest betting events in the globe. Betting odds and lines also greatly impact the amount of revenue generated by sports betting. Other factors include technological advancements, including the live streaming of events.
The future of sports betting revenue hinges on additional markets legalizing sports betting, via mobile betting, land-based, or a combination of both. An uptick in legal U.S. markets will trigger increased revenues, while new bet trends including same game parlays and in-game wagering, unlocks more opportunities for customers.
Online sports betting has significantly impacted sports betting revenue, notably in states where it is legal and regulated. The rise of online sports betting has facilitated the customer experience, allowing people to place bets remotely or in-person from the event itself, leading to increased revenue for sportsbooks. Betting site operators can also reach a much larger audience and customer-base. Overall customer convenience plays a large part in driving up sports betting revenue.
Gross revenue represents the total amount of money a sportsbook takes in from all customer bets, and it includes the total value of all bets placed, regardless of whether the bets won or lost. In other words, gross revenue is the total amount of money a sportsbook earns from its customers. Net revenue, conversely, is the amount of money a sportsbook earns after deducting all its operating expenses. This includes things like salaries, rent, marketing expenses, and other costs associated with running the sportsbook. Net revenue is the profit a sportsbook makes from its operations.
Major sports events including the Super Bowl and World Cup have a significant impact on sports betting revenue. These events garner a lot of attention from fans, which leads to increased betting activity and higher revenue for sportsbooks. The Super Bowl alone is the largest single-day betting event on the sporting calendar, which generates millions of dollars in revenue for sportsbooks.
