Auburn vs Georgia picks and predictions for October 3

Georgia had won four of its last five against Auburn. But uncertainty at the QB position, coupled with the the Tigers having a very stable Bo Nix, makes Auburn an appealing underdog.

Last year, I ranted on Twitter about how Auburn’s War Eagle VII — named Nova — wouldn’t stand a chance against Texas’ Bevo (editor's note: there's probably college football betting odds for that somewhere) because the Longhorns mascot would spear the bird in mid-flight and then promptly place him on a hot grill and consume him for a delicious dinner.

Auburn fans immediately attacked me because a large steer taking on human qualities and ironically barbecuing and eating other animals is clearly something that happens far too often in his country. Anyway, astute college football bettors know that Nova has been replaced with War Eagle VIII and given the name Aurea, which I believe stands for, “Auburn will never support mascot-on-mascot violence.”

That’s a loose translation.

One thing that hasn’t changed for the Tigers is the combination of head coach Gus Malzahn and quarterback Bo Nix, who dialed up a season-opening 29-13 win against Kentucky. On Saturday, it’s a huge step up in competition as Auburn hits the road for a Top-10 showdown with SEC rival Georgia Bulldogs.

Here are our best NCAA football picks and predictions for No. 7 Auburn vs. No. 4 Georgia, scheduled for Saturday, October 3 at 7:30 ET in Athens, Georgia.

Betting trend to know

The Tigers are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games after allowing less than 20 points in their previous game. Find more NCAA football betting trends for Auburn vs. Georgia.

Against the spread (ATS) pick

How you bet on this game will depend on what you think will happen at quarterback for Georgia. Stetson Bennett came off the bench last Saturday to replace D’Wan Mathis and led the Dawgs to a 37-10 win against Arkansas. Georgia barely missed covering the 28-point spread, but the game was closer than it looked. USC transfer JT Daniels could also get the call on Saturday, as he’s probable after recovering from an offseason ACL injury.

There are too many question marks at the game’s most important position for me to roll with Georgia here. The Dawgs have beaten Auburn straight up in four of the last five matchups, but Nix continues to get better each game and I think he keeps the Tigers close here.

PREDICTION: Auburn +7 (-115)

Over/Under pick

The early money has moved up the total in this game, but now is the time that we can find value on the other side.

The Under is 6-1 in the last seven meetings, and if defensive star Jay Hardy returns for Auburn, his impact could also help keep this number down.

PREDICTION: Under 45 (-110)

Prop pick

This is the only Top-10 matchup of the week, and it’s a night game in Athens, but I can’t throw down money on Georgia’s offense until the quarterback position is settled.

In addition, Auburn did a really nice job of containing Kentucky’s Terry Wilson last week, and that bodes well for the Tigers on Saturday — unless Bevo decides to show up and do some grillin’.

PREDICTION: Georgia team total Under 26.5 (+100)
