NFL odds Week 2: Opening lines, sharp money & line movement

NFL Week 1 is in the books, with NFL Week 2 odds posted and already getting some attention. Among the marquee matchups, the New England Patriots travel to face the Seattle Seahawks, and the Las Vegas Raiders open their brand-new stadium – albeit with no fans – against the New Orleans Saints in the Monday night game.

Bengals at Browns odds

Opening line

Browns -6.5, Over/Under 44

Why the line moved

UPDATE 7:30 P.M. ET THURSDAY: PointsBet USA opened the Browns -7.5 and is down to -6, just ahead of kickoff. "We're seeing good two-way on the side, slightly favoring the Bengals this morning, but now there's slightlyl more on the Browns," PoinstBet USA's Patrick Eichner said. "Bets split 50/50, but 55 percent of the money is on Cleveland." The total opened at 46 Saturday, and Eichner said there was immediate sharp action on the Under. By Wednesday, the total was down to 43, but it's since rebounded to 44.5, with dead-even two-way play on both tickets and handle.

UPDATE 2:45 P.M. ET THURSDAY: FanDuel opened the Browns -7 and dropped to -5.5 a couple of times, before settling at -6.5 Wednesday evening. A few hours out from the first game of Week 2, point-spread betting at FanDuel shows a solid lean toward the underdog Bengals on ticket count, but nearly two-way action with the money. Cincinnati is attracting 68 percent of bets and 53 percent of money. And moneyline bettors are banking on an outright upset, with the Bengals getting 85 percent of tickets and 75 percent of money.

UPDATE 1:30 P.M. ET WEDNESDAY: DraftKings installed the Browns as 6.5-point home favorites, and that lasted about an hour Sunday night before the number moved to 6, which is where it remains today. Early point-spread bettors are on Joe Burrow and the road underdog Bengals, who are getting 72 percent of tickets and 67 percent of money.

"We opened the Browns -6.5, down from a look-ahead number (last week) of -7.5, and we are now at -6," SuperBook executive director John Murray said Sunday night. "Cleveland didn't look good (at Baltimore), and there’s going to be a lot of pressure on Baker Mayfield to perform in the next few weeks. I don't know what we did to deserve this gem in prime time in Week 2." The last part of that comment was dripping with sarcasm, to be sure.

Rams at Eagles odds

Opening line

Eagles -2.5, Over/Under 45.5

Why the line moved

UPDATE 9:30 A.M. ET SUNDAY: The Eagles opened -2.5, the line flipped to Rams -1.5, then reverted to Eagles -1.5 at FanDuel. Los Angeles is getting 72 percent of tickets and 67 percent of money on the spread. The Under is taking just 36 percent of bets, but 66 percent of dollars, dropping from 48.5 to 45.5.

UPDATE 2:30 P.M. ET THURSDAY: After seeing no early movement Sunday night, this line has since bounced around a lot at The SuperBook. By Tuesday morning, it jumped the fence to Rams -1.5, then redirected back to pick by Wednesday morning. Eric Osterman, manager and oddsmaker at The SuperBook, said public play on the Rams helped push the initial moves, and some sharp play on the host Eagles help bring the line back to pick.

Murray said there was no early movement on this game, which was pulled off the board once the Cowboys-Rams game began Sunday night. It will go back up Monday morning.

"Philadelphia is a very banged-up team with a decimated offensive line," Murray said, pointing specifically to right tackle Lane Johnson (ankle). "It's hard to recommend a play in this game without knowing the status of Johnson."

Panthers at Buccaneers odds

Opening line

Buccaneers -8, Over/Under 49

Why the line moved

UPDATE 10:30 A.M. ET SUNDAY: At BetMGM in Nevada, this line reached -9.5 this morning, after opening Monday at -7.5. "Tickets are actually close, really good two-way, but the money is all on the Bucs," BetMGM's Scott Shelton said of a 5/1 money ratio on Tampa Bay. "They're on every parlay and teaser, too."

UPDATE 4 P.M. ET FRIDAY: Tampa Bay opened -8 on Sunday at DraftKings and stretched to -9.5 Tuesday, but just got back to -8.5 this afternoon. Part of that dial-back is due to Tampa Bay wideout Chris Godwin being in concussion protocol. But the betting splits show 60 percent of tickets and money are on the Panthers. And although the total is down to 47.5 after opening 48.5, 81 percent of bets and 75 percent of money are on the Over.

The SuperBook moved Tampa Bay to -9 Monday, but mostly to keep in line with the market. "We have some public play on the Bucs, mostly parlays, nothing too crazy," SuperBook manager and oddsmaker Eric Osterman said.

Broncos at Steelers odds

Opening line

Steelers -6.5, Over/Under 43

Why the line moved

UPDATE 10:30 A.M. ET SUNDAY: BetMGM Nevada's Scott Shelton said ticket count is 2/1 on the Steelers, but the money is pretty close on the spread. The line ticked down this morning from Pittsburgh -7 to -6.5.

UPDATE 4 P.M. ET FRIDAY: Pittsburgh moved from -6 to -7.5 by Tuesday, then dipped to -7 Thursday night at DraftKings. The Steelers are attracting 75 percent of tickets and 71 percent of money on the point spread. And the total plunged from 43.5 to 40.5, the lowest on the Week 2 board, with 62 percent of tickets on the Over, but 56 percent of cash on the Under.

UPDATE 9 P.M. ET TUESDAY: This line moved up a full point Tuesday at The SuperBook, from Pittsburgh -6.5 to -7.5, with Denver having injury issues. Cornerback A.J. Bouye has a dislocated shoulder and is unlikely to play Sunday, and the status of RB Phillip Lindsay (toe) is also in doubt. That's on top of star linebacker Von Miller suffering a preseason ankle injury that could keep him out all season.

Falcons at Cowboys odds

Opening line

Cowboys -7, Over/Under 52.5

Why the line moved

UPDATE 10:30 A.M. ET SUNDAY: BetMGM Nevada certainly needs the Under, having taken a $110,000 play on Over 53.5. On the spread, the Cowboys opened -6 and are now down to -3. "Multiple sharp bets on the Falcons at +4.5 and 4," BetMGM's Scott Shelton said. "The decision on the side is not too bad, pretty good two-way action. But tickets are 4/1 Dallas, with the public all over the Cowboys. It's the Pros vs Joes game of the early games, for sure."

UPDATE 1:30 P.M. ET WEDNESDAY: DraftKings opened the Cowboys -7, and after Sunday night's less-than-stellar showing in a 20-17 loss to the Rams, the line against the Falcons dropped to -5 Monday. It then went to -4 Tuesday, before ticking up to -4.5. Early action leans toward the Falcons, who are attracting 57 percent of tickets and 64 percent of money.

This line was only up Sunday until the Rams-Cowboys game kicked off, and there was no movement at The SuperBook. The line will go back up Monday morning.

49ers at Jets odds

Opening line

Jets +6.5, Over/Under 43.5

Why the line moved

UPDATE 10:30 A.M. ET SUNDAY: At FanDuel, this game is about as lopsided as could be, with 92 percent of tickets and 91 percent of dollars on the 49ers. who are currently -7.

UPDATE 1:30 P.M. ET WEDNESDAY: The 49ers were -6 at DraftKings on Sunday morning, moved to -6.5 in the afternoon and got to -7, and they briefly touched -7.5 before settling back to -7 Tuesday. Ninety-six percent of tickets of early bets and 97 percent of early dollars are on San Francisco.

Bills at Dolphins odds

Opening line

Dolphins +4, Over/Under 41.5

Why the line moved

UPDATE 10:30 A.M. ET SUNDAY: BetMGM Nevada took a $110,000 play on Bills -5.5, and Buffalo cash is flowing like mad. "It seems like everyone is on the Bills," BetMGM's Scott Shelton said. "Ticket count is 10/1 and the money is at least that. They just can't get enough of the Bills."

UPDATE 1:30 P.M. ET WEDNESDAY: DraftKings moved the Bills from -4 to -5.5 Sunday evening, and practically all the early action through Tuesday was on Buffalo. The Bills are landing 95 percent of tickets and 98 percent of money on the point spread.

Vikings at Colts odds

Opening line

Colts -3, Over/Under 48.5

Why the line moved

UPDATE 10:30 A.M. SUNDAY: Reyna Hernandez, manager at The SuperBook at Westgate, said Pros and Joes are on the Vikings and that the book has six-figure parlay liability to Minnesota. However, the Colts have been stable at -3 all week.

UPDATE 1:30 P.M. ET WEDNESDAY: This line went from Colts -2.5 to -3 on Sunday, and it's stuck there ever since. despite the large majority of early action coming in on the Vikings. Minnesota is garnering 86 percent of bets and 80 percent of money.

Lions at Packers odds

Opening line

Packers -5.5, Over/Under 47.5

Why the line moved

UPDATE 10:30 A.M. ET SUNDAY: BetMGM Nevada's Scott Shelton noted sharp play on the Lions at +6.5, but ticket count is 6/1 on the Packers and money 3/1 on Green Bay.

UPDATE 4 P.M. ET FRIDAY: The Packers were at -6 Sunday at DraftKings and bounced between 5.5 and 6.5 this week, currently sitting at -6.5. But it's all Green Bay, which is drawing 90 percent of tickets and 87 percent of dollars on the spread. The total surged from 46 to 49.5, with 75 percent of bets and 84 percent of cash on the Over.

The Packers were a big public play in Week 1 and proved deserving in a 43-34 road victory over Minnesota. But there was no line movement on the Lions-Packers game Sunday night at The SuperBook.

Giants at Bears odds

Opening line

Bears -5.5, Over/Under 43

Why the line moved

UPDATE 10:30 A.M. ET SUNDAY: Chicago opened -5.5 and got to -6, then tailed back to -4.5 and is now -5.5 at FanDuel. On the point spread, 55 percent of bets and 60 percent of money are on the road underdog Giants.

UPDATE 1:30 P.M. ET WEDNESDAY: DraftKings hasn't moved off the opening number of Bears -5.5, on a game with two-way action on the point spread. The Giants are getting 53 percent of tickets and the Bears 52 percent of dollars bet so far.

Jaguars at Titans odds

Opening line

Titans -10, Over/Under 43

Why the line moved

UPDATE 10:30 A.M. ET SUNDAY: The Titans opened -10.5 at FanDuel and are down to -7.5 this morning. with the Jaguars landing 68 percent of tickets and money on the spread.

UPDATE 1:30 P.M. ET WEDNESDAY: Tennessee opened -10.5 on Sunday night at DraftKings, but after a less-than-inspiring performance Monday night at Denver, the Titans dropped to -9 by Tuesday night. The Jaguars, who upset the Colts in Week 1, are landing 86 percent of early tickets and 95 percent of early dollars.

Washington at Cardinals odds

Opening line

Cardinals -6.5, Over/Under 46.5

Why the line moved

UPDATE 2 P.M. ET SUNDAY: At FanDuel Sportsbook, it's all Arizona on the point spread, at 77 percent of bets and 76 percent of money. The Cardinals opened -6.5 and are at -7. The total opened 45.5 and peaked at 47.5, then dialed back to 46.5 today, and the betting splits at FanDuel bear that out. Fifty-nine percent of bets and 67 percent of money are on the Under.

UPDATE 4 P.M. ET FRIDAY: Arizona opened -6.5 at DraftKings and reached -7 Thursday, and there are plenty of backers for the home team, coming off a road upset of the 49ers. The Cardinals are getting 85 percent of point-spread tickets and 87 percent of spread dollars so far. The total opened at 45.5 and reached 47.5 before ticking down to 46.5 Thursday, with 63 percent of tickets and 81 percent of cash on the Over.

Although Arizona posted an impressive Week 1 win at defending NFC champion San Francisco, there was no line movement on this Week 2 game Sunday night at The SuperBook.

Ravens at Texans odds

Opening line

Ravens -6, Over/Under 52.5

Why the line moved

UPDATE 4:15 P.M. ET SUNDAY: Just a few minutes before kickoff, Treasure Island sportsbook director Tony Nevill said this line stuck at 7 all week, with very even straight betting on the spread. However, the book not surprisingly is heavy to Ravens parlay and moneyline parlay play, and needs the Texans to at least cover, if not win outright.

UPDATE 2 P.M. ET SUNDAY: BetMGM Nevada has gone from the opener of Ravens -6.5 to -7.5, and this game looms large among the later kicks, particularly if some of the bigger favorites cover in the early games. "A monster game," BetMGM's Scott Shelton said, noting a huge discrepancy in tickets and money, favoring the Ravens. "The Ravens are on every teaser, too. It's the most lopsided money game of the day, so we'll really need the Texans."

UPDATE 4 P.M. ET FRIDAY: Baltimore was at -6 Sunday at DraftKings and topped out at -7.5 briefly on Tuesday, before reversing to -7. But it's landslide betting on the road chalk, with Baltimore attracting 87 percent of bets and 92 percent of money on the point spread.

"We opened -6 and moved quickly to -6.5. No point in waiting," Murray said of a quick move at The SuperBook. "The public will be all over the Ravens in this game, after watching both of these teams play in Week 1. The Texans may be the biggest need of the week for sportsbooks next Sunday in the early games."

Chiefs at Chargers odds

Opening line

Chiefs -7, Over/Under 49

Why the line moved

UPDATE 4:15 P.M. ET SUNDAY: "It's all Chiefs," Treasure Island sportsbook director Tony Nevill said, noting Kansas City opened -7 and reached -9. "They always take these big playoff teams and stick 'em in the moneyline parlays." The book needs the Chargers, or one of the other underdogs in the later games, to bust up parlay and moneyline parlay liability. "We're trying to avoid an all-favorites sweep in the late games. We need an underdog outright."

UPDATE 2 P.M. ET SUNDAY: FanDuel is getting slammed with Chiefs point-spread action, as K.C. is attracting 91 percent of tickets and 85 percent of dollars bet so far. That explains the move from Chiefs -7 to -8.5. The total opened 50.5 and plunged to 46.5, then rebounded a tick to 47.5 Saturday, and the Over is actually the play now, at 79 percent of bets and 69 percent of cash.

UPDATE 4 P.M. ET FRIDAY: Kansas City is up to -8.5 at DraftKings, after opening at -7. And there is almost no one interested in Los Angeles so far, with the Chiefs grabbing 96 percent of tickets and money on the spread.

Kansas City looked good in a 34-20 Thursday night home win over Houston. Los Angeles didn't look that good in barely beating host Cincinnati 16-13 Sunday. So it was no surprise Sunday night to see the Chiefs quickly move to -7.5 for this AFC West clash.

Patriots at Seahawks odds

Opening line

Seahawks -3.5, Over/Under 45.5

Why the line moved

UPDATE 8 P.M. ET SUNDAY: FanDuel Sportsbook is heavy to Seahawks spread tonight, with 73 percent of tickets and 70 percent of money on Seattle, which is now -4.5. The total is at 45, with 73 percent of bets and 69 percent of cash on the Over, per usual for a prime-time stand-alone game.

UPDATE 7:40 P.M. ET SUNDAY: Several books spent at least a little time at Seahawks -3.5 this week, but South Point was not among them. Sportsbook director Chris Andrews said he opened Seattle -4 and the line is currently -4.5. "Right now, it's all Seahawks," Andrews said, noting he was surprised the book wasn't drawing more action on the Patriots at +4.5. "There's hardly a bite at 4.5, and I think I'm the only 4.5 out there. They haven't touched it. The need will be the Patriots."

UPDATE 2 P.M. ET SUNDAY: BetMGM Nevada has seen a little Pros vs. Joes action in the Sunday night clash, with sharp play on the Patriots and the public on the Seahawks. "Ticket-wise, they're playing the Seahawks, but money is going to the Patriots," BetMGM's Scott Shelton said. The line was at Seahawks -4 this morning and briefly dipped to -3.5 before returning to -4.

UPDATE 4 P.M. ET FRIDAY: DraftKings moved Seattle from -3.5 to -4.5 by Monday, then back to -4 Tuesday. New England is drawing some point-spread interest on the road in a Sunday night showdown, but the Seahawks are taking 70 percent of tickets and 67 percent of money.

"We opened Seahawks -3.5 and moved quickly to -4," Murray said of a Sunday night uptick at The SuperBook. "Seattle looked very potent offensively (at Atlanta). Mr. Unlimited Russell Wilson looked like an MVP. This will be a huge test for Cam Newton. The public will be on the Seahawks, and the books will be rooting for another 'dog on Sunday night."

Saints at Raiders odds

Opening line

+4.5, Over/Under 51.5

Why the line moved

UPDATE 8 P.M. ET MONDAY: With kickoff in 15 minutes, PointsBet USA is sitting at Saints -4, after opening -4.5 and getting as high as -5.5. PointsBet's Patrick Eichner said 80 percent of point-spread tickets are on the Saints, but 60 percent of spread money is on the Raiders, thanks to heavy game-day money on Las Vegas. The Raiders are also attracting 55 percent of moneyline handle, for bettors banking on an outright win, although 80 percent of moneyline tickets are on the Saints. The total opened 50.5, was at 48.5 this morning and now is 47.5, but PointsBet will still need the Under, with 85 percent of tickets and money on the Over.

UPDATE 5:15 P.M. ET MONDAY: Three hours before kickoff, William Hill US has the Saints -4.5, down 1.5 points just today, as New Orleans was -6 overnight. However, the book is still very much going to need the Raiders tonight, even with hometown fans firing away on Las Vegas' new team. "There's plenty of Raiders money in the market, but it's meaningless," William Hill US director of trading Nick Bogdanovich said. "There's so much parlay liability going to the Saints from Sunday's games that it's not even funny." Bogdanovich added that straight-bet ticket count is running about even in most WillHill jurisdictions, with liability to the Saints. Mississippi is the exception, where not surprisingly, tickets are running 3/1 on the Saints.

UPDATE 4 P.M. ET MONDAY: The SuperBook made a swift move early today from Saints -5.5 to -4, and as has been noted at other books, it was sharp play on the home team tonight that predicated the move. "We had a guy we respect come in and bet $20,000 at +5.5," SuperBook supervisor Cameron Coombs said. "After that bet, the market started to shift down. We're going to need the Raiders outright, with all the moneyline parlays (to the Saints) that are going into today."

UPDATE 1 P.M. ET MONDAY: FanDuel opened the Saints -4.5 and quickly got to -6.5. The injury to New Orleans wideout Michael Thomas (ankle) generally knocked off a half-point last week, but the big move just happened today, from Saints -5.5 to -4.5. The betting splits belie that move, indicating sharp play on the home underdog tonight. New Orleans is getting 78 percent of bets and 71 percent of money on the spread, yet the line is moving toward Las Vegas in its debut at the sparkling new Allegiant Stadium.

UPDATE 4 P.M. ET FRIDAY: New Orleans opened -5.5 at DraftKings, got to -6.5 for a few hours Tuesday and fell back to the opener Thursday night. However, Las Vegas is not getting much attention as it opens a new stadium in its new home, with the Saints landing 89 percent of spread bets and 84 percent of spread dollars.

UPDATE 9 P.M. ET TUESDAY: This line stretched to -6.5 at The SuperBook by Tuesday morning. However, this evening, news broke that Saints wideout Michael Thomas was ruled out this week with a high ankle injury. The SuperBook then dropped the line to -6.

"We opened Saints -4.5 and moved quickly to -5.5," Murray said. "It pains me to talk about this game, thinking about how great it could’ve been for this city. What an event that would’ve been at the new stadium. It will still be a huge handle game, with the public all over the Saints on the road."
