Oklahoma vs Iowa State picks and predictions for October 3

Iowa State leaned on running back Breece Hall in an upset win over TCU two weeks ago, and they could give him another heavy workload against Saturday as they host a porous Oklahoma defense.

No conference has been more unpredictable for college football betting this year than the Big 12, and NCAA football bettors have had to ride the roller-coaster. Iowa State fell to Louisiana to open the season. Last week, Oklahoma lost outright to Kansas State as a 28-point favorite. And Texas needed two touchdowns and an onside kick to force overtime and escape Lubbock with a win against Texas Tech.

So if you like betting on this conference, just made sure you have a healthy dose of prescription medication by your side at all times. Just a little tip from a guy who has zero experience as a practicing physician.

The Sooners aren’t out of Big 12 contention, but they have some work to do, starting with Saturday’s matchup in Ames. Let’s check out our best NCAA football picks and predictions for No. 18 Oklahoma vs. Iowa State on Saturday, October 3. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 ET.

Oklahoma Sooners vs Iowa State Cyclones betting preview

Weather

Ames can sometimes be a dreary place, and we’ll see a taste of that on Saturday. It’s going to be cold, with a temperature of 42 degrees, plenty of cloud cover and a 25 percent chance of rain. Winds are expected out of the north-northeast at 6 mph. Be sure to monitor the gametime conditions with our NCAA football weather info.

Against the spread (ATS) pick

This is a difficult game to judge because we just don’t know how Oklahoma is going to respond after that stunning loss to the Wildcats, in which it blew a 35-14 second-half lead. Kansas State was racked with COVID-19 and forced to elevate numerous players from the practice squad into starting or backup roles, making the loss even more shocking. Quarterback Spencer Rattler will likely be a future star for OU, but he was crowned far too early in his career — as evidenced by his three picks last week.

Iowa State had two weeks to prepare for TCU, and it paid off with an upset win in Fort Worth. Cyclones leader Matt Campbell is one of the better coaches in the country and he’s got senior quarterback Brock Purdy running the show. Purdy was a Heisman candidate before the Cyclone's season-opening loss to the Ragin’ Cajuns, and against the Horned Frogshe leaned on running back Breece Hall, who rushed for 155 yards and three scores.

The money in this game immediately came in and hammered the Cyclones from a 10.5 dog down to 7. Iowa State is the right side here, and I still believe there is value if the number doesn’t drop below that key number.

PREDICTION: Iowa State +7 (-110)

Over/Under pick

Both teams had awful defensive performances in their respective games last week. The Sooners gave up 38 points and 400 yards of offense, while the Cyclones allowed 34 points and 499 yards.

The Over is 7-1 in the last eight head-to-head meetings and with each defense performing so poorly, I look for that trend to continue.

PREDICTION: Over 62 (-110)

Team total pick

A K-State team that was down so many players had no business moving the ball up and down the field on Alex Grinch’s group in Norman.

Purdy may not have matched expectations so far this season but he could be in a line for a breakout performance...unless the Sooners make some quick fixes, and I’m not convinced they can.

PREDICTION: Iowa State team total Over 26.5 (-125)
