Max Verstappen can't be stopped. After never claiming the checkered flag in several chances, he finally won the British Grand Prix.

As a result, Formula 1 odds have Verstappen locked in as the betting favorite entering Hungaroring on Sunday, July 23. He's already won in Hungary, so he's not looking to shake a monkey off his back this time around.

Ahead of the full race on Sunday, here are the post-qualifying Hungarian GP odds, our pre-qualifying picks, and our best bets after Saturday's qualifying.

Hungarian Grand Prix 2023 picks

Lewis Hamilton has taken pole position for Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix, breaking Max Verstappen's streak of five straight qualification wins. Hamilton, who has won eight of the last 16 races at this track, is now a potent threat to end Verstappen's six-race win streak and can spoil his attempt to reach the all-time mark for longest race win streak.

Can Hamilton pull off the upset and secure his ninth career win at the Hungarian Grand Prix or will Verstappen once again find a way to take home a win and keep his pursuit of history alive?

Race prediction: Max Verstappen to win

There is understandably more intrigue and interest in this Sunday's race than there has been in months, with Max Verstappen having failed to secure pole position for the first time in six races. Lewis Hamilton, winner of eight Hungarian GPs in his career, stole away that distinction on Saturday with a fantastic showing in qualification.

Verstappen has all but locked up the Drivers Championship, but there is still much at stake for him. His active six-race win streak is now the longest of his career and he is in pursuit of a Formula One-best nine straight if we can continue on this path.

But despite Hamilton's efforts on Saturday and his record at this track, Verstappen still is the favorite to win and for good reason. His 2023 season has been as dominant as any in F1's history, and there's little reason to believe that starting second on the grid means he can't climb it come Sunday.

-200 is arguably as good odds as you'll get to back Verstappen this season, and it'd be foolish not to do so.

Pick: Max Verstappen to win (-200 at FanDuel)

Best bet: Lewis Hamilton fastest lap

Despite the likelihood that Verstappen pulls away with a win on Sunday, it goes without saying that Lewis Hamilton is still the second-best driver for Sunday's race all things considered. Again, Hamilton has won half of the last 16 Hungarian Grand Prixs. Half.

And it was just in the last race, the British Grand Prix, where Hamilton flexed his comfort and familiarity on a track to climb from seventh on the grid to a second-place finish. He carries arguably an even higher magnitude of comfort and familiarity into Sunday.

And yes, Verstappen has the better car and he has secured five fastest lap distinctions this season in 10 races. But that is still just half, and his -133 odds to do the same on Sunday naturally implies he is carrying too much weight in that market.

Pick: Lewis Hamilton fastest lap (+850 at bet365)

Hungarian Grand Prix opening odds reaction

Max Verstappen to win (-286)

It's certainly chalky and absent of intrigue, but the reality is that Verstappen to win will continue to be a good bet as long as the odds remain in this range. As the winner of six straight races (by good margin) and as the reigning champion of the Hungarian Grand Prix, Verstappen deserves infinitely more respect at this point odds-wise.

Sure Verstappen's last win (the British Grand Prix) only netted a 3.798s margin of victory, but his prior four wins netted a combined 60+ seconds of margin, a rather convincing demonstration of his literal separation from the rest of the grid as of late.

More importantly, Verstappen put on one of last year's best performances in last year's Hungarian GP. Despite starting tenth on the grid, Verstappen worked his way to the front of the pack and won by 7.834 seconds to net him his first career win at the track.

Lean: Bet before qualifying

Max Verstappen fastest lap (-143)

Despite Mad Max's dominance, his fastest lap prop continues to be priced a bit too ambitiously, as we have noted in past previews. Verstappen has secured five of this year's 10 fastest laps, which is an impressive clip, but not a clip that matches the implied probability of even the best odds available on this prop.

Additionally, in his eight career races at this track, he has secured the fastest lap just once. And looking at a broader scale, Hungary has provided some unclean and shaky results for Max, in the past having just secured two other podiums in the other seven races. He also took ninth in 2021 and retired in 2018's race.

Verstappen has the juice to win, but based on his track record this season and on this particular track, the juice is not worth the squeeze.

Lean: Stay away

Lewis Hamilton podium finish (+130)

This was a prop we highlighted for the British Grand Prix, highlighting Hamilton's displayed comfort level at that track. Hamilton went on to take third despite starting seventh on the grid, perfectly displaying that noted comfort level.

The Hungarian Grand Prix provides a similar environment for the arguable Formula One GOAT. Hamilton is winner of half of the last 16 Hungarian Grand Prixs, spanning back to 2007. That includes a three-peat from 2018-2020 and back-to-back second place finishes in the two races since.

Hamilton's best days may be behind him results-wise, but in the right environments, he can still produce +EV results relative to his market. Sunday provides that exact opportunity.

Lean: Bet before qualifying.

Hungarian Grand Prix 2023 pre-qualifying favorites

Max Verstappen (-300 to -310)

At this point, books aren't going to go any longer on Verstappen to win because he's so consistently dominant.

After claiming victory at the elusive British Grand Prix, Verstappen opens as a significant betting favorite to win the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix. Unlike the British, Verstappen has some baked-in prior success at Hungaroring, winning last year and finishing second in 2019 and 2020.

Sergio Perez (+1,100 to +1,000)

Checo, by virtue of being Verstappen's Red Bull running mate or otherwise, has two wins this year and is seemingly the most likely candidate to grab the checkered flag should Verstappen falter.

But, Perez hasn't had the greatest track record in Hungary. His fifth-place finish in 2022 was his best showing at the race, one he's appeared in every year since 2011.

Lewis Hamilton (+1,400 to +1,200)

Lewis Hamilton has eight career titles at the race, including three straight from 2018-2020, but hasn't won a single race since the 2021 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in part thanks to Verstappen's dominance but also due to Mercedes falling a bit behind.

He does have three podiums in his last four races and has been the runner-up in Hungary each of the last two years, so Hamilton could be a dark horse to unseat Verstappen. But, there are some other drivers in the field with prior success at this race.

Esteban Ocon's lone win in F1 came at the 2021 Hungarian GP, beating out Hamilton and Carlos Sainz.

Daniel Ricciardo, who is back in the saddle for AlphaTauri after replacing Nyck de Vries, won this race all the way back in 2014. But he's not the active driver with the longest drought since his last victory at Hungaroring. Fernando Alonso was victorious in the first year the event was held at the track in 2003.

Understanding F1 betting odds

The most popular way to bet on Formula 1 odds is by simply picking the winner of a particular race. Other popular F1 betting options include which car/constructor will win and whether or not a particular race car driver will end up on the podium with a Top-3 finish.

F1 race odds usually look like this:

  • Sergio Perez +1,400

This means that on a $100 bet, you'll stand to profit $1,400 if Perez wins that particular race. If one driver is especially dominant, you might see a minus sign (-) ahead of that driver's odds like this:

  • Max Verstappen -120

This means that you would need to bet $120 to win $100 on Verstappen winning the race.
