Hector "Macho" Camacho was in critical condition Tuesday after being shot in Puerto Rico.......

Police in San Juan said Camacho -- winner of super lightweight, lightweight and junior welterweight world titles in the 1980 -- was severely injured and a companion killed while they were sitting in a car near a shopping center in San Juan, Puerto Rico newspaper Primera Hora reported.

Authorities said one or two men got out of a sports utility vehicle, walked over to the parked car and opened fire, killing a man identified as Alberto Mojica Yamil Moreno and seriously wounding Camacho, 50.

Ernesto Torres, director of the Rio Piedras Medical Center, told newspaper the ex-boxer was shot in the neck and had lost significant amounts of blood.

Torres said an update on Camacho's prognosis would be issued Wednesday.

Camacho went into cardiac arrest this morning..

"The situation with 'Macho' is very delicate," Centro Medico director Dr. Ernesto Torres told reporters during a 7 a.m. media briefing on Wednesday. "The prognosis is not good."

Friend and former manager Ismael Leandry told The Associated Press Wednesday that doctors were waiting for Camacho's mother to decide whether Camacho, 50, should be taken off life support. She was expected to arrive Wednesday morning from the U.S. mainland.

The bullet apparently struck Camacho in the jaw but exited his head and lodged in his right shoulder and fractured two vertebrae...

"The most complete overall boxer that I've ever fought in my career was Hector Camacho. His speed was tough to deal with...and he had a lot of boxing ability. I trained to punch with him, and he would come in, throw a combination, but when I threw one back, he would be 10 feet away from me. This would be after he had hit me with three or four shots.
