I think the ref decided to give Cotto a shot to go out swinging, the only way he could win, and saw that he went into backup mode again, was starting to get pummeled again and decided to do what he should have done earlier and stop the fight, not to make Manny look better but to protect a man from further injury who had no shot of winning. If this was not a fight that should be stopped then they should never stop fights at all.
I agree it came way too late and can understand this pissing off distance and decision backers but as a KO backer I think it was better late than never. This is a decision that no one would ever question unless they made that specific prop bet while people were openly questioning the decision to let it go on even though they had not bet at all. I know his wife is sure happy they stopped it.
