The corruption has always been a part of boxing. People thought that with new technology, instant replay, many more critics that naturally the sport would clean up in fear of losing business. Like the old saying goes... Controversy is boxing (and it makes money).
First problem is (and has) been these false ranking systems. You get HBO 24/7 that people get to know the fighters, and with a sentimental attachment and the boxers (who is going to lose) speaks about his new trainer and preparation, and is now a more focused fighter. In sales as a kid, I learned many sales techniques and methods, but one method is the most powerful. When you can create an emotional attachment to situation for sale, all logic and reason are over-powered. Until you get Federal oversight (like John McCain tried over a decade ago to enforce, you can start to get legit bouts. At that point, fights will start to take place on Costa Rica, etc... places where the U.S. will have no jurisdiction even though they are considered U.S. friendlies and almost provinces.
It just keeps getting worse, but as long as people pay, they can fine and fire people, but with all the economic money (that benefits the US economy) it stimulates, it is a hard rock to break as the show-runners (the key money makers; half are even unknown to the public).
For those not as familiar with boxing history in the area of key people being bought and paid, basically owned. One of the biggest known scandals that continued was Don King had José Sulaimán Chagnón (the president of the WBC) ranking fighters that I never even heard of, thus allowing them a title shot, but more like taking a hit from a shotgun. This went on for years, and nothing was ever done. I followed boxing and also subscribed (way before internet days) to boxing and fight magazines, and King would get one of his fighters and arrange a bout against a fighter from a European country that shined a glamorous record of undefeated to a few losses. King made money, his fighter got a baby slice, the unknown fighter who lost got a payday of like $35k for a title fight but to him it was a bigger payday than all his fights combined (whether you think it was fair or not).
Boxing has been corrupt since it started and got worse as they started filming fights. Boxing had been against the ropes for over a decade but finally the Pacquiao fight was a blessing in disguise as boxing finally got its first standing 8 count. Now will the opponent press the action and send boxing a KO punch and thus finally reformatting a great sport and install some punitive crimes (similar to wall street scams; white collar crimes) thus creating responsibility, credibility and some personal integrity in all facets of anyone involved from fighters, trainers, promoters, presidents of boxing councils, judges and referees, and even the hotdog man!
Also, I would make it very clear, regarding Margarito and the hand wraps scandal that these type of incidents should be investigated to the maximum because boxing is already a brutal sport, but illegally adding to what could cause severe damage and even a ring caused death. These are no different than a street fight when someone uses brass knuckles not in defense for his life, but to teach that loudmouth a lesson about respect (lol).
Thanks for reading as this topic deserves to be seriously dealt with urgently and very strictly. Yes, they will alter issues that rise up every now and then, and that's fine and the way it should be as we are always learning so we must adjust our standards and rules to coincide with them!
Thanks and enjoy whatever fights that are on the level!!!
