Not too much happening this week except for the Solo Boxeo finale on Friday and the PPV from Zurich on Saturday afternoon. We've got some big things coming up in January and February, including Margarito-Mosley, Darchinyan-Arce and the return of Friday night fights, but not having Solo Boxeo around anymore is going to be a tough pill to swallow. At least we're getting a decent card to end it, with Alvarado-Huerta. So, be sure to crack open those Tecates one last time this Friday night and pour a little out for the sad loss we're all going to endure. Onto this weekend's action - well, what little action there is...
Nikolai Valuev vs. Evander Holyfield Over 9.5 Rounds (-130) (Bodog) 2.6 units
This one posted at -140 on 5dimes and -150 at the Greek, with no movement at all at any of the books so far on either side of the prop. It's a little curious seeing the best price at the squarest book, but value is value and I can't argue with the number here on a fight that should go the length. Of course, when you're putting a 7 foot ogre in the ring with a vitrual senior citizen, things could get a little dicey, but at more or less even money, I'll take the chance that the Real Deal's still got enough to carry him to the final bell (or at least halfway through the 10th round). Valuev has never impressed me with his aggression and the more I see of him the more it seems like he's always content to use his long, plodding jab to pile up points, while hugging and clinching his way out of whatever treacherous moments arise. Granted, the 47 year old Holyfield didn't look so hot in his wide decision loss to Barney Rubble last October, he did manage to stage a nice final round, showing that he's still packing the necessary stamina and heart to give it his all even when his body and mind aren't what they used to be. I'll be cheering for the elder statesman here to pull off what would be a miraculous upset, but this looks like an easy points win for the giant Russian.

Hey ghostkid and G8RB8. Good to see you guys on the prop here. Looks like 5 Dimes has it at -160 now, which is encouraging if you're into reading lines. Still at -150 at The Greek, but the line is steady at -130 over at Sportsbook and Bodog.

I would run away from that over. Too many people are too worried about Evander's health to let him take a beating. They used to give ex-champs the benefit of the doubt, but not in his 46 year old case. If he gets in any trouble, towel or doctor stoppage. The boxing world just will not let him take another beating - and that is exactly what should happen this weekend. Good luck, but I would be very, very, cautious on that one.

sorry walk, i just don't think valuev will be delivering any type of "beating"... he'll win, but holyfield is set enough to hold himself well... he went the full 12 with ibrigimov who i consider more dangerous than valuev in the KO dept. and it was much more home turf for ibrigimov than this is for valuev...
as always...we'll see... I think the over/under is spot on here... would love some round props..

Good logic about not taking the over. Valuev straight after all.
Hey snippets, isn't that the kind of thinking that got you in some trouble about 11 months ago. At -1000, valuev straight up has no value except in one of those chalk parlays that always seems to blow up in bettors' faces.

Mike Alvarado vs. Miguel Angel Huerta Under 9.5 Rounds (+110) (Bodog) 3 units
What a bittersweet fight here. It's the end of the line for Telefutura's Solo Boxeo and that's got me a little teary eyed. For quite a while, I've usualy started out my Friday evenings watching these broadcasts before getting into whatever else the night has entailed. Well, tonight it's the end of the line. At least we're getting a great one to end it. And once again, it's Bodog providing a softer line than the Greek or 5 Dimes (-115 and -125 respectively). I'll take a chance here that Alvarado gets things done in a convincing fashion tonight against the steady, but battle-worn Huerta. I've been following Alvarado's career pretty closely and love what I've seen so far. He's got a perfect blend of power and tenacity, which I expect to be too much for a guy like Huerta, who is only 30 but has a lot of mileage on him. I expect Huerta to put up a good scrap in the early rounds, but once Alvarado settles in with his jab, his volume should pick up and gradually wear down the Mexican gatekeeper. Surely Alvarado will want to close out the Solo Boxeo series with a memorable KO and that should provide the already powerful favorite here with that added incentive to finish things off in or around the 10 round mark.

Good luck to us man, this one should be a fun one. I need it after a bad Italian dish this afternoon.

Mike Alvarado vs. Miguel Angel Huerta Under 9.5 Rounds (+110) (Bodog) 3.3 units
Well, what's to say? This one went better than I could have imagined. For those that didn't see it, Huerta started out with a strategic approach in the 1st round, staying small and keeping his guard up. For a brief minute, he seemed to frustrate Alvarado with his movement and elusiveness. Everything changed in the second, as Huerta spent most of the round against the ropes digesting uppercuts and hooks. In the 3rd, Huerta fought intelligently, staying in the center of the ring and landing a decent number of counters. The 4th was a repeat of the 2nd, with Huerta getting pummeled to no end and eventually forcing the ref to wave it off. Great ending to a great series on Telefutura. RIP Solo Boxeo. Thanks for the great fights.

I'm glad i won money, but that was a disgusting decision. Props to Holyfield for executing a good fight plan, although the fight was definitely a snoozefest. Valuev's slow, plodding style is terrible for boxing, but this latent corruption in Italian and German cards is even worse.

Nice call A2C! Hollyfield gave the big Russian a boxing lesson & got robbed blind. These big European Robot fighters are pure crap IMHO. That includes the overrated Bobsy twins.

Thanks Red. Yeah, the Valuev decision was atrocious. Agree with you on the Klitschko sisters. How many has beens are they going to keep getting matched with? It's ridiculous. Watched Sanders-Wlad earlier this afternoon on youtube for a good chuckle.

Solid as a rock today buddy. Great weekend and great year.
I didn't see the fight so I can't comment on the decision, but on the topic of European corruption; it seems like it has gone to all timish type level in 2008. I did profit from today's controversy with the parlay cashing, but I honestly didn't think there would be a need for any European shenanigans today. I just really hope we get to see Valuev in the ring in 2009 against one of the Klitschkos, Haye, or probably even Arreola so we can see sasquatch fall hard to the canvas and never be hear from again.
