Williams seems Popular and he COULD to be the next big thing. I'm not so sure. Pavlik is enormous at the weight and I think his power will cause Williams all kind of trouble. Williams is not Hopkins and I think this fight means more to Pavlik. If he loses he has nowhere left to go. Whereas Williams can say he is not a legit middleweight and head back down to 147 and have big fights like Berto, Clottey, Sugar Shane etc etc. Think Pavlk wins this

Good to see Paul Williams finally getting some recognition. The only way Paul Williams wins this fight is if he loses it himself.

Boxing wise, nothing Pavlik can do to beat Williams besides landing one bomb. Pavlik needs to be SET to throw power shots. Williams has the speed and stamina to do this for 12 rounds.

It may take Williams stock down a bit pulling a Mayweather, but in my eyes I swore it was "hit and don't be hit", we are used to brawlers with zero defense or boxing skills.

Pavlik was exploited by Jermaine, and then exposed 100 % against Hopkins.

Yes Williams is NO Hopkins, not many up there with Bernard. Pavlik was FORCED to take this fight, he didn't even want to fight Sergio Mora.

HBO wanted to him be a PPV fighter instead he took the easy fight route since Jermaine,  Gary Lockett on a PPV  what a joke, then he stepped in as a heavy favorite against Hopkins and got exposed!

He then went on for another PPV event against Marco Antonio  Rubio.

You would think a man after beating Taylor would go after names, but he went the money easy fight route, and now must face his toughest test.

I believe after this he will be "The GHost" as he has made more than enough to live in comfort for the rest of his life.
and now he is being forced to take a tough fight.

Well If Paul Williams doesn't have a plan b, what about Pavlik? He is a straight forward needs to be set to power punch fighter.

Lets put is this way, you say Williams didn't have a plan b against Quintana, I personally don't know what happened that night it wasn't Paul Williams mentally in the ring.

In the rematch.. he demolished Quintana in 1 round. I think if you gave Pavlik 60 tries against Bhop, he would lose all 60 times.

Granted not many have a defense like Bernard, but I believe something was wrong with Williams in the first fight, he wasn't hurt he wasn't anything he looked drugged up. he didn't throw punches, didn't do anything.

However Pavlik performed exactly how Pavlik always will against Hopkins. Pavlik has NO plan B either, he is a straight forward fighter.

Pavlik has a deceivingly sneaky jab that he doesn't use often enough. I agree this is a BIG step up in weight for Williams, hence why he has a punchers chance (Pavlik that is)

Williams is quicker, better jabber, better movement, better everything (power is unknown at this weight). So the edge would have to go to Pavlik.

Remember as I said it Williams fight to LOSE, if he stays on the outside and just rotates he can win in a lopsided easy decision.

Unlike Jermaine, Williams has NO stamina issues, remember until Jermaine blew his wad he was beating Pavlik SILLY, and Bhop did the same.

Here's the irony if Williams wins, it's actually WORSE for HIM. That means he will never be able to fight at 147 again, cannot JUMP back down after a WIN to 147 to fight guys that now seem TINY compared to Pavlik.

Personally there is not much at 160, 168 is where it's at.

I hope this makes sense, the BETTER he looks against Pavlik, the less likely anyone would fight him at 147, they dodge him now.

If he beats Pavlik, and then JUMPS down to 147, it's the same as what Mayweather did against Marquez, fought someone over 2 weight classes SMALLER than him.

Williams wins, he will be fighting himself for the next few years, For boxing fans this is a good matchup, but for Paul Williams this is a NO win situation.

 If Pavlik is the best at 160, and he beats Pavlik.. no where to go, cannot go back to 147 as you will now be a bully 160 fighter picking on the 147 fighters.

I do agree Paul Williams has tons of talent to LOVE, he hasn't truly proven it yet (fighting Winky Wright after Winky laid off for almost 2 years isn't PROOF to me).

I know he has the god given talent, but he does have that one blemish (a mental one) that happened against Quintana in the first fight.

Until he shows that Williams won't ever show up again, I would never lay BIG money on him.

Personally I would have rather seen him fight Clottey at 147/154 (Clottey has a hard time making weight at 147) comes in at like 165 at fight time.

Clottey would have probably lost, but would have been a decent test at 147. I just feel Williams is being managed wrong and taking the wrong fights.

Honestly what does Paul Williams GAIN besides recognition for beating Pavlik.. after that what happens? Move up to 168?

I personally would have kept Paul at 147 as long as his long lanky body could make it. He said to make 160  he had to eat like an animal and barely made weight, so gaining weight is not easy for him.

I also think Pavlik cannot make weight at 160, this will be his last fight at 160, he's not a youngster anymore, and I believe that's why he had a catch weight with Jermaine, and met Bernard at 170 and then fought tomato cans in between.. it's time he moved UP in weight.

Rich you make a great agrument for Williams and I wouldn't try to argue too much with you on this. Your agruments are far more solid on this fight then mine. I only have a hunch for Pavlik, very little more. I think he wins by KO in a fight he is trailing in. As you pointed out few fighters have a defence like B-HOP. Which means at some stage Williams will get caught and I will be very interested in how he takes a big punch from a MONSTER middleweight. Pavlik will be close to 170 on the night, PW 157. Thats a BIG difference.

Yes Pavliks style is predicatable but its effective. He fought twice and beat JT twice. Thats solid enough form. B-Hop is a nightmare match for him and B-Hop will destroy RJJ in January btw.

Rich, you make an interesting point about what next for Paul W. Lets say he is as good as you think he is and makes short work of Pavlik in spectacular style. Which means if he cant go any higher then 157, super middleweight is not an option. 147 as you correctly pointed out will not be an option. We might see the most avoided fighter in boxing even more avoided! With very few options.

For me Floyd Mayweather (as immensly talented as he is) will NOT go down a legend unless he fights Pacman/Cotto winner AND Shane Mosley AND Paul Williams. Sadly he will never get in the ring with PW. Which means what fights are out there for Williams if he wins this?

Good find (about Williams weight), this makes me wish this fight doesn't happen.

This will sound dumb, but a loss for Williams at 160 means he will be accepted at 147. A loss always attracts MANY opponents.  Even you yourself, could make a case for it merely being Pavlik is TOO strong at 160 for Williams so 147.. would be IDEAL for all of us.

If he comes in the ring at 157, we know Pavlik is coming in exactly like you said anywhere around  170 (maybe even higher).

It's why this fight doesn't make sense for EITHER fighter, there is NO ONE left at 160, Williams cannot go to 168 as stated in the article.

Pavlik I don't believe can make 160 after this fight.

So let's be Paul's manager, where should he go? I would have kept him a monster at 147.. and MAKE them fight him everyone.. and eventually May weather if he wants to retire with the utmost respect .. would have to fight Williams or always have that question mark hanging over his head.

I would have Williams vs Clottey.. then Mosley.. although Mosley seems too small.

Then Mayweather, forget Cotto.. Williams is a nightmare match up for Cotto.

Why do I think he can beat the best which I believe is Mayweather, Floyd has trouble with south paws, and fast south paws. He will be the smaller GUY, and probably not the FASTER guy either maybe equal!

This would be the only time I would go against Floyd.

After reading that article and realizing Paul Williams is coming in at 157.. which will be at least 13 pounds LESS than Pavlik, makes me worried.

I still believe Pavlik would lose, but if Williams is only coming in at 157 (and struggling to get there).. 13 pure pounds is a ton to give up.  Could possibly take BOTH sides depending on the props..

I agree man the crop of guys from the 80's .. were great. Although I wasn't into boxing then as I was born in '76 lol.  I watch all the fights at my dads house, we watch all the big fights.

I love how he bitches how boxing is a joke now, my favorite of the 80's group was Hagler :)

My dad hates Roy Jones (even in his Prime) and Floyd.. he likes brawlers and throw back fighters. He tells me I don't know what true boxing is about, it ended in the 80's before I was old enough to watch.

I may not have seen those fights "live" but I have downloaded all of them.

Who knows maybe HBO will TRY to compete with showtime.. I know Cotto Mosley.. Berto and Clottey would be down for it.. that as Williams would be.. also.. and Floyd would HAVE to JOIN otherwise he has NO BELTS OR considered P4P.

I  wouldn't even mind if HBO made this a Super 8 and spread it out over 2 years like showtime. I wouldn't even care if they made the fights a PPV (Just put 2 fights in each Tourney on each PPV) and throw any other fighters you want to showcase .., but give us what we WANT.

I applaud all 6 fighters on showtime also, all of them besides Jermaine are risking their careers! 4 of the 6 fighters are UNDEFEATED, Kessler has one loss, and Jermaine has lost to champions only.

I also applaud Froch, he came across to the U.S and took on Jermaine Taylor. Yes he was losing bad, but he still showed tremendous confidence coming to the U.S and eventually got the job done.

Lets hope competition creates another tourney, will be glad to see how HBO responds.. to what showtime has done.

Hey Rich I was born is 75! lol. I just have watched nearly every big fight on video from Ali in the 70's all through the 80's. I have millions of boxing videos and DVD's. I also boxed as an amateur and won a junior bronze medal in my national championships (I like to tell anyone who will listen lol). I retired 38-7 which aint bad . I didnt have a big KO punch sadly but I had a jaw better then Froch's! lol. Never once on the floor or took a count. Sadly though against a slick boxer, counter puncher I could easily be outboxed. What might have been. Ok I am drunk so sorry for the worthless info

Right now I am in year 2 of my coaching qualifications so I hope I can start coaching soon. Just coaching young kids to get them off the streets (I live in a tough area).  

I love this forum, chatting to guys that love boxing. I can't wait for tomorrow. We are only 4 rows back from ringside so this is something I cant wait for. I like Carl, met him twice and he is a good guy. But I really want Dirrel to shine in this too.

It's good to know what drives people to love boxing. Some are just degenerate bettors, some love the sport. Nice when you can mix the two!.

I grew up in a tough neighborhood also, a tough area of Brooklyn,NY.

Sadly I don't think I would be much of a boxer, I would be a white Paul Williams 6'1 about 160... soaking wet lol. And as you can see by my photo a jaw that is waiting to be hit.  :-)

Punisher, UD.  Too fast, too busy, too many angles, too much everything.

Pavlik will need a KO to win.  Granted Kelly is the biggest puncher PW has faced, Williams has been hit clean quite a bit in his career and never been remotely hurt.

Pavlik will be like a punching bag, you need to box and move against Williams or he will windmill you with activity.  Pavlik is as straightforward and plodding as they come.  Every time Pavlik lands one, he'll get hit with 2 or 3.  In other words, unless he knows William's block off with a big shot, he'll get outpointed.

This fight has been postponed again.  Pavlik's camp says that the staph infection is still not fully healed. 

 

My prediction is that this fight will never happen.  Pavlik has faded from the public eye, and I don't really see him re-emerging. 

Williams vs. Martinez on the 5th, probably.  Clottey is S.O.L., because Top Rank is no longer involved.  The undercard is still up in the air.
