MISSISSAUGA, Ont. (CP) - He has thrown for more yards than any quarterback in pro football history, is a four-time Grey Cup champion and three-time game MVP and just two seasons ago was named the CFL's outstanding player.
But if Damon Allen is going to remain as the Toronto Argonauts starting quarterback, he's going to have to work for it.
The Argos opened their training camp for rookies and quarterbacks Wednesday, with Allen among five players vying for the team's starting job. The others include long-time backup Michael Bishop, former Heisman Trophy winner Eric Crouch and former NFLers Tom Arth and Mike McMahon.
Allen has had a stranglehold on the Argos' starting position since 2003 when the club acquired him in a trade with the B.C. Lions. Two years ago, at the age of 42, Allen threw for a career-high 5,082 yards and captured the CFL's outstanding player award for the first time in his illustrious career. The year before, he led Toronto to its first Grey Cup title since `97.
But last season, Allen showed signs of mortality. He missed five games with a broken finger on his passing hand and the injury seemed to hamper Allen's ability to pass once he returned. He finished the season with just 2,657 yards passing and had nearly as many touchdowns (12) as interceptions (11).
