It's a shame there is only 29 days in February this year.
Missouri Valley Tournament games last year came in at 111, 111, 114, 117, 126, 102, 110, 115, 116. Last night’s games came in at 117 and 114. These are the 8th and 10th slowest teams in the conference and were two of the better defenses at one time before ISU tanked late. Neither team crashes the glass, in fact both would rather sit out by the three point line and launch three’s all day. Teams are pretty much mirror images in terms of style. Should be a much lower scoring game than both meetings this year in the tournament setting, and if that’s the case, it’s also hard for me to ignore the advantage ISU has in the paint from an offensive and defensive standpoint. The meeting Illinois State won between the two this year, they focused on getting the ball to the interior, should go back to that focal point today.
5* Illinois State +2.5
2* Northern Iowa/Illinois State Under 122.5
Since Citadel has slowed the pace in their games and taken a more possession valuable approach, they’re 2-1 as they closed out the season with their only loss coming to a College of Charleston team that closed out the season on a 6-1 run. The final scores in Citadel’s final three games came in at 94, 113, and 102 and possession totals came in at 54, 57, 61. From the looks of the total, we’re in for another slow paced game, and a game that Western Carolina struggles with as they’re a quantity over quality type team. When they can get a good # of shot attempts, they can put up some points. However, when they can’t, they don’t. In games that have fell below the 64 possession mark this year, Western Carolina is 1-8…straight up. Their lone victory came about a week ago against a Samford team that has the worst defense in the Southern Conference, and a game that Western Carolina made 17 three’s. I’m also getting the team from the better half of the Southern, who went 3-3 against the other half within the conference.
3* Citadel +7
Missouri Valley Tournament games last year came in at 111, 111, 114, 117, 126, 102, 110, 115, 116. Last night’s games came in at 117 and 114. Indiana State playing second game in 24 hour period, and they’re not a team that likes to speed it up and go up and down with Wichita and they haven’t exceeded 65 possessions in a conference tournament game with Lansing at the helm. If you paid any attention to the regular season meetings, these two teams aren’t all that fond of each other. Wichita’s offense is certainly scary in any setting, slow or fast, but basing this on the notion that this should be slow and physical and some tired legs for a jump shooting team like Indiana State. Also get two top 4 defenses in the Valley. Neither team crashes the glass, neither team allows the other many second chance points, and neither team forces the other to turn it over all that often and neither team turns it over too often. Both meetings this year went over, this one should have a different feel to it.
2* Indiana State/Wichita State Under 131.5
