MAAC Analysis: Canisius loses four seniors, although they do return the most important part of their offense in PG Belardo. Parotta brings in some stellar athletes and is playing a totally different brand of basketball with those athletes. He’s getting more up and down this year primarily because he’s young and his players can’t defend and haven’t bought in yet. That, and he’s looking ahead to next year when Asprilla & Sosa join the squad. Those two transfers come from Kansas State and UCF, and will join Belardo who transferred in from USF next year to be one of the most potent offenses in the MAAC. As for this year, they got some nice role players, most notably Hymes who can shoot it from anywhere. He’s really going to be the difference maker here. Iona has shown no effort to defend, and they don’t really have to with the pace that they’re playing. They’ve scored more than 90 in every game outside of one where they scored 89 and that coincidentally came against the fastest team they would have played in the non-conference. Last year’s trip to Canisius ended in defeat for Iona, a game where they attempted 13 more shots, made one less three-pointer, out-rebounded the opponent, and made more FT’s. Simply put, they should get some revenge and with Canisius deploring a totally new system with much youth, this should be one of those ballgames that if you like watching a team get up and down with very little defensive display, you are in for a good one. Niagara’s offense last year scored 48 and 49 on Fairfield. This is an offense that needs a good number of shots to be put up to score and stay in ballgames. Here is their season in a nutshell:

64 Shots = 65 Points = Win
53 Shots = 59 Points = Win
72 Shots = 102 Points = OT Win
48 Shots = 55 Points = LOSS
57 Shots = 71 Points = LOSS
58 Shots = 52 Points = LOSS

Another convincing thing I should note is that in their three losses, those all came against three pretty up-tempo teams, which is rather weird that you would think you get more shots in an up-tempo game, but that just goes to show how bad this offense really is. Fairfield’s played a pretty tough non-conference schedule, so they’ll be ready for MAAC play, but they are on game #4 of a five game roady. Rider has had a few extra days to prepare for a Manhattan team that really hasn’t put together any quality wins despite playing some teams tough on the road. Steve Masiello seemed to walk right into a nice position as head coach of the Jaspers and he really hasn’t changed much with the team. This is a team that is thriving off of the experience they got last year when a majority of the team was either ineligible or injuried, so while they seem young, they do have the experience. Rider’s defense has looked woefully awful so far this year, noting the 80 they gave up to Drexel, although that game directly proceeded the collapse at Pitt. They’ve played some really good offenses as of late, and the tempo has been up and down, which is exactly how they like it, so that should continue tonight. Manhattan isn’t one to shy away from going up and down, noting Massielo came over as an assistant at Louisville. Both teams excel at getting to the foul line, and nothing should change this one as last year’s meetings averaged higher than 50 FT attempts a game. I value Rider a bit more than I do Manhattan in the grand scheme of how this conference plays out, so this is probably one of those games you need to win for that to hold true. When I look at Rider, I look at the collapse at Pitt, and this being their first true opportunity to bounce back from that with conference play opening up, at home, against a team they played fairly well against last season. 

Other Analysis: Not much I’m interested in. I like Florida, but not really sure about matchups in the paint. That game, along with Cincy/Georgia, and Vanderbilt/Louisville should all be entertaining, to say the least. We get a first real glimpse of Auburn this year and how much better, if at all, the offense has improved over last year. They’re going to face a brutally tough defense, and the only team that has played an easier schedule so far this year is Tulane, and they’re undefeated at 8-0 as well. Nevada looks enticing with the points at home as Washington has Marquette and Duke on deck. The problem with going against Washington here is that while they do struggle away from home, they rarely struggle against teams that can’t slow them down and I’m not sure Nevada will look to do that.

Your forgetting there best player whos a transfer for Canisius, Heath who already has Nba looks. Next year Asprilla will probably be 6th man, there squad will surely be making a impact next year though.

Has looked a bit slow thus far, not really seeing the minutes I expected.

It does appear Belardo is out tonight, and Sunday with a back issue. Major loss for that offensive system.

no not the younger Heath his brother the transfer from Roberts he has to red shirt with the other two he is a serious threat all over the court. Josiah Heath is starting again and guarding Glover tonight which could be very bad for Canisius there bench is very bad and I expect him to get in foul trouble.

NROPP I SEE THAT YOU SAW THAT HE WAS OUT.. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS NOW?  I AM THINKING IONA SINCE THEY ARE MISSING THEIR TOP PLAYER.  WAS POSSIBLY THINKING THE UNDER BUT REALITY IS IONA COULD STILL SCORE 90+ POINTS, THOUGHTS?

My initial thought was over before seeing the injury to the PG, but now I would certainly think that Canisius is going to have to slow this down to have any chance of competing. Just not sure how they deal with the loss to Belardo. Game just doesn't come together for me either way.

Yah, I struggled with that one for a bit. Probably more realistic in the 15-16 range I would assume. Brown's defense can't really stop anybody, and their wins have come against teams who can't shoot. This one should be up and down and in those types of games, you might see a more consistent offense from Iowa. Scary spot also with the letdown after big win over Rhode Island.

Yeah game is sketchy I had to tease it I will actually be there today but Iona is really what it comes down too. They cost me a game earlier this season due to just lack of effort at the end of the game in garbage time. If they really want to take it to this team tonight they can do it easily but I honestly just dont know how Canisius will score. So I know Im getting ahead of myself a little but what do you think about the Nc game tomorrow? any ideas?

Kentucky/UNC will be a watch/enjoy. Probably won't even look at it. I think Kentucky is the best team in the country in terms of offense, defense, and coaching. Doesn't mean they'll get a win here, though.

Pretty excited for this one and I'll be on the under. Both teams are pretty much mirror images of each other, so the familiarity on defense should prove to be the difference. Ohio will try to slow the game down, and NIU should struggle against the 4-3. Not the most confident, but looking for some defenses to step up for a change.
