I think Minnesota is a tad bit over-valued, considering this game is being played on the road, but I’m going to leave it alone. Wake Forest is
most notably known for recently losing to Delaware State at home on
Friday. It wasn’t all that great of a match-up considering DSU plays
zone and Wake isn’t all that great of a shooting team. It’s a different
situation tonight when the Gophers high intensity pressure comes a
calling, and Wake should be designed to handle it. Wake’s only really
test against pressure this year was a big failure at Arkansas, but teams
turn the ball over 20 times at Arkansas regardless of how good or bad
they are at Arkansas so that’s not all that big of a blemish. Wake
Forest and Danny Manning should have a nice advantage in the paint
tonight, and when Minnesota’s guards go up against similar size they
have proven to struggle. No reason for Minnesota to be favored by more
than a possession here on the tail end of a three-game roady, but I’m
going to leave it alone.

I’m not going to deal much with Syracuse this
year, primarily because the lack of depth will play a part in most of
their games, but a few tidbits on this match-up. First, the familiarity
with the Syracuse zone should play a part. Nobody on the Michigan roster
has experienced it, which is a bit worrisome, but Beilein’s had good
success against it dating back to his days at West Virginia. I think
you’ll see Michigan and Beilein rotate different defenses all game
designed to keep Syracuse out of the paint, probably some 2-3 match-up
and a bunch of 1-3-1 because Syracuse isn’t the greatest of shooting
teams. The Michigan offense usually looks unstoppable at home, so
obviously a big advantage with a good shooting team here, but I hate
backing teams coming off an abnormally good shooting performance
(Michigan 14/24 from three on Saturday) so I’m leaving this one alone.
Slight value in Michigan, just hate the roster not knowing what they’re
up against despite the coach knowing what he’s up against if that makes
any sense.

Niagara is
in the middle of a conference sandwich on short rest, so the likelihood
you get their best effort tonight ahead of a conference date (they are
1-0 in the conference) with Canisius on Saturday is not good. But St. John’s
isn’t in the greatest of situations here, either having just taken
Gonzaga down to the wire and a date with Syracuse coming up. Get me far
away from this one.

Well the blue-print for UT Arlington’s
offense is right in front of us, as they were only able to make 13 of
their 42 shots on Kentucky’s interior defense, so not sure what changes
as they travel to take on Texas’ just-as-good-ok-maybe-not-as-good-but-still-good
interior. UT Arlington’s got a bunch of scoring/slashing guards in a
three-point reliant system, and just not sure how it’s going to work
because they’re scorers and slashers and not shooters. They end a
three-game roady here, too, so this is a pretty gross spot seeing their
need to score inside with their guards. Texas, however, isn’t in the
greatest of spots either. Quick turnaround for this one after narrowly
beating the defending champs Uconn and then head to everyone’s future
champs Kentucky for a showdown on Friday. On paper, Texas wins by 40.
But will Texas show up?

It’s hard to say how Umass is going to rebound on short form here after blowing a nine point lead at Harvard on Saturday. I believe LSU and
Umass played in the marathon early last year and Umass came away with a
92-90 victory. Of importance in that game was the fact that Jarell
Martin did not play in that game after being injured in the first
minute. I’ve commented on LSU a bit this year in regards to just how bad
I think their guard play is. Martin and Mickey (should be available
this game, but sat out last game with an ankle injury) are a dime a
dozen down low, but the guard play is ultimately going to tell the story
of this LSU team this season. They’re soft on the defensive side of
things and really try and filter opponents down low where Martin and
Mickey can make a play or grab a rebound, which actually should help
them in this matchup here tonight. Umass is a team that’s
ultra-attack-happy, one that likes to get down low and score at the rim
and draw a foul and get to the line. They’re not the best of outside
shooting teams, so they’ll likely try that here and not sure how it
works out with the tandem of Martin and Mickey waiting for them down
low. Defensivley, Umass is going to work outside to in, really pressure
the guards and get after it on the outside and try to come up with a
steal. If they can’t force the turnover, this defense is pretty
susceptible down low, which isn’t a good thing against LSU. Do I hate
LSU’s guards? Yes, I do. But can I depend on them to take care of the
ball and penetrate the gaps and crash the glass - things that will all
be available to them here? Yes. I’ll take the revenge and the Umass
hangover.
