I have made several future plays. The initial two are my primary wagers; I also have some smaller plays (at the risk of spreading myself too thin)
Primary wagers:
North Carolina (8-1) There are def some better numbers out there, however my local shades my numbers due to fronting credit on futures. I have seen some sites offering up to 12-1.
UNC returns a talented class from last year. The pieces are in place to make a deep tourney run. The pressure on Marcus Paige as primary shooter will alleviated with the additions of a stellar freshman class. Leading the way will be sharp shooter Justin Jackson. Jackson has shined during exhibitions and early practices; he will likely be the starting freshman. This will help Paige return to his natural position. This scoring combo will provide UNC with outside and inside shooting they so desperately needed last season. With the likes of a slimmed down Meeks (a Sean May type player) and Brice Johnson down low, the Heels should have a strong front court presence. Tokoto has also worked on his shot to add to his freakish athletic abilities. UNC has a deep bench that should give them the luxury of a full court defense and a constant/prolific push up the floor on offense. Controversy with looming NCAA issues should be handled well by a mature team that is no stranger to adversity. The Tarheel's OOC schedule is one that should have them more than seasoned for the Big Dance. The season starts in the Bahamas in a heavy weight tournament with Butler, UCLA, Georgetown, Wisconsin, Florida, and UAB. Must watch Thanksgiving weekend hoops. Add in games with Kentucky, Ohio St, and Iowa and the Heels are running an OOC gauntlet. I am not even going to mention the ACC schedule...
I thought North Carolina put together a fantastic season last year with the adversity of losing Hairston and the lack of more than one prolific shooter. These voids have been filled, and UNC is poised to be a deep and fast team. They should be seasoned, and these points are the recipe for a Final Four berth.
Gonzaga (30-1) No need for a such a breakdown above as this is simply one of my pics every season. It just seems time that this team will make a deep run after several season of early exits. The pieces are there with a senior back-court and a monster down low. I tend to wager on teams that are fast and deep, and this is the spot for them. Few returns a mature class that can score with anyone in the county. The WCC has improved over the years, and Gonzaga's OOC matchups with SMU, Arizona, and UCLA should add to their preparation for a deep run.
Small Flyers:
Virginia (40-1) Frustrating team to play.
SMU (30-1) Played this before the Kennedy ineligibility for the opening semester. Regardless, I like a talented team with a chip on their shoulder. They have beefed up their OOC that should get them to the dance.
Flyer leans (no plays as of yet):
Villanova
Oklahoma
Nebraska
Florida State
Conference Title Winners:
Villanova (1.5-1) Really like this team in a notable down year for the Friday Fish Fry Conference. Just a fan of their style of play and coaching. Think we see a slow start with their challenger in Georgetown.
May add a future in the near future for future reference. That said, IMO it's a solid card. Hopefully will have thoughts and a play or two for the opening weekend.
