Durand Scott and Larkin are too much for young Marcus Paige and crew. Why Williams has been increasing his minutes as of late befuddles me. These cats are active defense and they do it without fouling.

UNC is not playing well though they do have superior talent. I think Roy Williams has lost it. They will get it together by tournament time just like they have the past couple of years. But tonight is not their night.

Because he is their only true PG. You cant run a potent offense without a PG, and Marcus Paige (unfortunately) is the only option. Strickland is good for filling the position duties in spurts; however, he is more of a defensive oriented and transitional offense player.

Williams has to play him, he's the only option.


That said, I do agree that Roy Williams is one of the most ineffectual in-game coaches out there.

I'm a Carolina fan. Williams is driving me nuts. How do you come into every basketball season since Ty Lawson except 1 without a PG? He lucked into Kendall Marshall. Got stuck playing him just like D'antoni got stuck playing Lin. Had no clue he would be good. Maybe thats the first sign that a coach is an empty suit. When the key to your team is sitting in seat 12 on the bench and you don't realize it you must go.

He has no such luck this year. How hard is it to find a guy who can dribble past someone/anyone and pass it to any one of a  slew of guys who are bigger/faster/stronger than their competition. Kendall Marshall rode that strategy to an early entry into the NBA draft without a left hand. Thats how easy it is. Anyone with 1 hand to dribble with and half a brain can run these squads to deep tourney runs. Yet Williams cannot recruit anyone with these capabilities.

If Reggie Johnson was playing then I would like Miami with any line but without him I think even the weak NC post players can do some damage.

I feel your frustration. Carolina alum and life long (realistic) die hard. I personally can not stand certain aspects of Roy Williams. His terrible ties, gosh darn jokes, and recruitment of "good guy" four year players. He has to realize the game has changed and players are simply using schools as 1-2 year stepping blocks to the NBA (ie Kentucky). Man, we need a Rasheed Wallace style player or Lawson to put some fire in this team. I wont even mention in-game calls and HOLDING ONTO TIMEOUTS like he cash them in for handjobs after the game.

I could go on all night (especially my outrage when Carolina lost to Kansas in the Final Four a few years ago after he said "one of my teams will win" and then rocked a Kansas button at the NC game)...

However, I do think he normally has a good recruitment campaign. IMO, he didnt luck into Marshall. He offered Marshall a ride waaaaay before any other offer I can remember. He saw something there. He was right, albeit he didnt expect the overnight stardom eh got last season. Marshall was a 4 year player, but his one window to make a big NBA contract was after last seasons special season. His stock was NEVER going to be higher. It was the smart move, the right move, and a move sanctioned by Roy. Never has a NBA team drafted a team with less NBA talent (other than passing skills). Maybe Jason Kidd comes to mind.

Hence the situation this season. Roy never visioned Marshall not being here and Paige was recruited as a backup PG at best for Carolina. Its really not his fault. He never thought Marshall would be gone and he would have to start a freshman PG that would have (most likely) never been a starter in the first place.

That said, dont sweat it. I forgive all of Roy's misgivings because he can recruit and he has those kids ready to play every March. Remember, the regular season is really meaningless. It's essentially a scrimmage for the big tourney and Roy usually has them ready to play. Case in point, 2 National Championships in the past few years (and one I think we would have had a chance to win w/out Marshall being hurt; man UK vs UNC matchup would have been epic)

Plus, players still like him and players still want to come to UNC. His scheme is run and gun; who wouldnt want to play that? Who wants to play 40-50 point games in the Midwest?

We'll be fine. Just check out the PG recruits coming up

He gets on my nerves and really has a hard time managing in game aspects. However, get the right players and me and you could coach them. That's his game.

Pffft. Yeah right. Carolina will be a force in recruiting year in and year out.

All the big traditional teams have ups and downs, but they will ALWAYS be relevant. Just ask haters of Kentucky, UCLA, and Indiana; and even UNC.

Kentucky goes nearly decade without a NC and now they are challengers (if not faves) every year. Indiana was in shambles, and now they are the team to beat. UCLA pulls in a dominant class and is a strong sleeper to make a run. UNC had an 8-20 season and went on to win a National Championship.

I agree with you in full except for point guard. UNC used to be a bastion of great point guard play. It hasn't been that way since Roy got there and started picking the groceries. He found Lawson and is 0 for IMO since then. I always looked at the Kendall Marshall signing as a throw away scholarship on a whim. You may be more informed than I am. WHichever way we're gonna slice it, UNC needs to get more consistent point guard play.

Who are you trying to kid dude? Harrison Barnes was voted First Team All ACC even before playing a game at Carolina. This kids career at UNC was a complete and total bust. Roy had no ability to get the best out of this kid and that will bite Roy in the azz the rest of the time hes at Carolina.

When I talk about Blue Chippers I mean REAL one, the ones that change a program. So save your Isiah Hicks, Kennedy Meeks, and Nate Britt talk, these kids are nothing special. Speaking of Nate Britt, your "so called" next great PG is a fraud. Seen the kid play numerous times and his stock has fallen faster Mark Mangino on a lawn chair.

If you arent getting the Andrew Wiggins, Julius Randle, Harrison Twins or Jabari Parkers of the world (Parker going to Duke by the way), then NO you aren't recruiting blue chippers.

So you are telling me that UNC will never have a top high school recruited player again? Get real, dude. Will your tune change if they sign the likes of Wiggins or any of the number one recruits in the 2014 class? Or does your crystal ball not have them as "blue chippers" like your aforementioned? If not Merlin, we can conclude the dialogue on the grounds you are a stubborn donkey.


Regardless, UNC (whether Williams is there or not) will NEVER recruit players with one and done mentalities. Their recruitment method has and will always be to recruit a class that fits their high tempo offense. This may not bring the highly touted players that are looking to jump to the NBA after one season year in and out, but I can guarantee that they will continue to bring in top 10 recruiting classes every year. And with that there will be their share of blue chippers.

I don't hate Carolina I just know Roy and his recruiting isn't the same as it use to be. Since HB, who has he brought in that meant anything?
