The classic 'Letdown angle'.
A bettor's back-pocket pick me up.
What is that?
After an enormous win for a team, that team is so high up emotionally - celebrating, interviews, basking in the limelight - coupled with all the attention they'd receive, they can't regroup and focus on the following game.
And in the following game when you are playing "A monster" (in KGB's voice from Rounders), you are even in bigger trouble as a team.
This is one of those bolded, capitalized spots for the Notre Dame women.
UConn is the queen of the women's CBB mountaintop. There is no greater college team, men or women...ever. They even surpassed UCLA's 88 game men's streak..by a country mile...111 consecutive games won.
When you beat the UConn women, particularly when you dispatch them in the tournament, then allowing YOU to win what was once impossible (as the trophy had already been handed to them by all pundits and sports betting sites, a whopping -550 to win it all before the tournament started - making the Warriors NBA preseason odds look positively delicious in comparison at -210), you have a monumental task focusing the next game.
Worse, Notre Dame won on what was essentially a buzzer beater with 1.0 second left, even heightening the emotions further!
So to recap the ND side:
1. The Notre Dame women just knocked off the greatest CBB women's team ever (yes last year's was arguably better but that is a long discussion so we'll group them together and say this one and that one were equally good). MASSIVE Letdown from that.
AND
2. They also knocked UConn out of the tournament which gives them a shot at a title no one thought they are or anyone else could win. Yet another LAYER of MASSIVE Letdown given what's now in front of them.
AND
3. They did it the semi's and they have to play a mere 2 days later on a national stage on a lazy Sunday. Another layer of MASSIVE Letdown.
And Worse, who are they playing?
4. The ONE team that thought it would have an impossible REVENGE game agains this year (UConn's revenge that is) against UConn, Miss State ending their 111 game win streak last year? THINK of the Revenge UConn now doesn't have! What an ESCAPE Miss State now has. What motivation!
Think of the absolute jubilation Mississippi State experienced when they saw they'd play Notre Dame instead of a revenge game against UConn in the championship. That is SO hard to overcome for ND already on huge emotional high.
It is so hard, Mississippi State (38-1 this year too) couldn't overcome it THEMSELVES in the championship losing ATS to South Carolina (-3) last year 67-55, after beating....UConn!
And here they are BACK in the championship game and they DON'T have to play UConn, Notre Dame doing the deed for them?
Beating the UConn women is in a league of it's own: It literally is BIGGER than winning a title in some ways and the season can be regarded in an incredible success anyway!
Wow. The Letdown Angle. Tried and True.
