Please Fire Gary Williams

I know williams has won a championship and made a few final four appearances with this program but his lack of recruiting has made this team a joke for the past few years. Their not even the best team in maryland for god sake, they lost to morgan state. If this program is to ever be taken serious again gary williams must be fired!

He does not need to be fired.  They lost their good big men last year.  That is the only reason they are not a very good team this year.  Gary Williams still coaches with a lot of fire and passion... not to mention he is a class act

Class act coach. Even program goes through recruiting lumps. He lost his solid big guy last year and that times time to re-build a new one. The program will be back together sooner then later.

They lost their good big men last year and they did what again last year? Thats right they missed the tournament again! Even after their championship run all of their so-called great recruits were a flop. Mike jones, strawberry, and Ibekiwe or however you spell it had one decent season in their four year career. If these were your good recruits I would hate to see your decent recruits. Williams is well known for not putting all his effort in recruiting and would rather coach a bunch of two and three star recruits who may get their occasional upset but overall miss the tournament. Hell even when they do make the tournament they get knocked out in the second round! Losing to Morgan State was the tip of the iceberg! Hell, it took them overtime to beat vermont on their home court!Williams can coach with all the passion and fire he wants as well as be a class-act, but in the end it comes down to wins and losses and right now this team is almost as bad as when he first took over the program.

They didn't get local kids Durant, Beasley, Nolan Smith, Ty Lawson , Roy Hibbert, or any of the Balt Kids who played on George Mason's Final 4 team.. enough said ...

I'm glad I'm not the only one with this crazy thought that one of the best coaches in the ACC should NOT be fired.

I got an idea, why don't you retitle this thread: "Fire Gary Williams Because He Lost Me My Bet Today."  That seems to be the premise behind such an otherwise assinine idea.

Maryland lost a couple years ago their two best assitants coaches... since then they never could get the top recruits. Gary Williams is a fake and always been.

  Wonder if there were fire Jim Calhoun threads when UConn missed the tournament and the NIT all together 3 years ago??  Teams have rebuilding years (most of them at least)  UNC was nothing 5 or 6 years ago.  Takes time to build great teams... Maryland is not as great as they have been in the past... but again Gary still coaches with fire and passion... and teaches the kids well... he's not at fault for this loss... totally outplayed

There seems to be somethingf missing with MD now. Can't quite finger what it is but you can't dispute Billy Hahn not being on the recruiting trail has hurt them big time. 
 
Losing Gilchrest hurt alot in my opinion.

thadrizzle77- actually i won on duke. Easiest bet of the week! After this season they only have hayes and grevis for one more year. I wonder how good they'll be after that. Is this rebuilding going to take more time than the Orioles rebuilding. The orioles live in the past just as gary williams does. Good recruiting doesnt always guarantee success but the odds are muchbetter.woopdurritis- nice info but the past is past and things are only going to get much worse for this program before they get better if williams is still the coach. When Miami and Florida State have a better basketball program than maryland, you know your in serious trouble!

I agree...Gary doesn't even have to leave the MD/DC/VA area to recruit potential championship teams but he choses not to...Its a kids 2 minutes from College Parks campus is ranked the number 1 junior PG in country...plays for Dematha...signed with Tennessee....AND THE STORY GOES ON AND ON ABOUT LETTING AREA PLAYERS GO....ACC AND BIG EAST TEAMS ARE FULL OFF THEM!

Recruiting in the ACC has to be the most difficult thing to do.  Gary Williams hit a dry pocket in the pipeline states over the past few seasons like every team, except a rare few, go through at some point.
 
You need to give the guy some time.  All great coaches go through recruiting slumps, it's apart of the game.

Who does everyone think MD should hire?  Who is the one who will bring us the star recruits?  If they let Gary go, the next guy will fail just the same.  It's just not "sexy" to go to Maryland.  Everyone wants to put on the Carolina Blue or play in front of the Cameron crazies.

If maryland cant even land the local recruits why the hell would someone out of state even want to consider Maryland? Maryland should be lucky to have so many great prospects in the DC/Maryland area and they are unable to capitilize on it. Duke and Carolina are going to get their 4 and 5 star prospects every year but not all of the local prospects are going to carolina and duke so that is no excuse.

Williams does get Montrose kids -  Vasquez and Bowie .. but between all the guys I mentioned and you did -that's an All Star team..
 
Booth has no recruiting ability and he's a former Dunbar of Baltimore guy who played in the NBA -same with Michael Adams ..
 
Joe Harrington doesn't want to recruit ..
 
Villanova got Yarou and Armwood from Montrose for Next Year ..

I live here in Md.  It is not a ghetto at college park.  It is a typical college town, but has the dc area as an avenue.  The guy said it.  He doesn't like to recruit the great players because he feels like  he can coach the second and third tier players.  There is too much talent in this area for him to constantly miss out.  By the way are you familiar where Duke is located.  It is one of the roughest areas in the Raleigh area.  TRUST when I say that.

Turk- Something to consider is that many of these blue chip recruits in the D.C. area are right at home in a place like College Park.  The culture shock of the Happy Valley's, Blacksburghs and Morgantowns keep them from going there as well.

I grew up in P.G. county, live in Anne Arundel now and could remember the difference when I went to college in a rural town.  Took some getting used to. 

But you said it, that campus is garbage.  If my son were D-1 talent I'd tell Gary and advise my son "thanks but no thanks".

one of gary's biggest problems imo, is that he does not guarantee starting spots or minutes to ANY incoming freshman. to a fault he remains loyal to jrs and srs, cant remember who, but williams lost a cant miss kid  a couple years ago because the kid was not promised minutes.
