Buffalo upset #10 West Virginia on the road in an impressive win,
in overtime. I saw that game, and overall it was extremely sloppy on
both teams. However, give credit to Buffalo as they made some big
shots. Buffalo is a good team returning 5 starters from a team who
upset Arizona in the tournament last year. They are a run and gun style
team and do have good scorers, but sometimes play too fast and out of
control.
Southern Illinois lost at Kentucky by 12 in an
impressive performance. They have a good veteran coach Barry Hinson,
return 4 of 5 starters, including Kavian Pippen, Scottie's nephew, and
also another key big man who was out last year. I
think SIU's game plan will be try to slow down the game.
Nice thoughts, I'll use the words in bold as bullet points.
I had WVU on my fade list to start the year, and thought they were over rated heading into the season. I'm still regretting that I didn't bet Buffalo in that spot since I actually like this Bulls team, and anticipated a WVU regression, but I wanted to "see" first. The point being, for me it wasn't quite the upset most think it was. WVU was up by DD with 5min left. They got complacent, their new crop of kids are lazy and don't play with much intensity on D as Huggy's kids have in the past.
SIU Carbondale has a crazy good Home Court advantage that the average person doesn't know about. The Bulls have never played there. This will be their 3rd game all ready(2nd road) and SIU had only 1 game so far. Going to Morgan Town and Carbondale b2b isn't easy, and it definitely isn't easy winning both of those.
Buffalo does play fast, a blistering pace. A lot of that has to do with their ability to crash the glass on offense(creating extra possessions). Here's one aspect that worries me, SIU will have to protect the rim on missed shots. A team that plays fast, who's coming off of overtime, with b2b travel will be tired. SIU plays slow on offense, they will make the Bulls work on the defensive end of the court. This has the recipe for the Bulls getting fatigued fast.
So SIU lost at KY. KY was in the ultimate bounce back spot where they were coming off that embarrassing loss to Duke. So you'd expect a good effort from them. If you read into the boxscore a little harder than just looking at the final score you'll see that this was indeed an "impressive" loss. They led KY for a total of 19 minutes. They held a lead in both halves. With 8 minutes left in the game, KY actually was looking like they could lose the game outright. To do that on the road at Kentucky is impressive for a mid major school. Not to mention that KY was ranked #2 overall to start the season.
For the Bulls, CJ Massinburg might be the best player in hoops that not many people might know. Did anyone know Khalil Mack when he played for the Buffalo Bulls? CJ dumped 43 points on the Mountaineers, had 14 rebounds(he's a guard) and went 9/15 from the arc. That's an insanely great performance. What are the chances he comes even close to duplicating that again? I'd be fine with half a stat line as good tonight. The rest of his team went 2/22 from the arc. SIU ranked #176 last year in 3pt attempts allowed at 21.7pg, at 33%. Vs KY they allowed only 14 attempts. So it looks like guarding the arc was a point of emphasis over the off season. All eyes will be on Massinburg no doubt.
This SIU team returned their 4 last year's top scorers. Like xxgambler mentioned, their center was out last year with injury and now he's back. That gives them 2 capable bigs who should help the front court grab rebounds.
THIS LINE OPENED SIU +1.5 at betonline. I got SIU -0.19 by my nerdy #'s. It's hard to quantify angles,HC, and other stuff into #'s but I've been tweaking those things for years. It most definitely isn't always right.
I didn't see this line getting to 4.5 but it did. I'm ok with +4 for -107 vig.
Best of Luck
